Resellers getting Chanel items first and selling for premium

I don’t understand why people would ever pay over retail for items from resellers? I’ve noticed one of the FB groups has started to slowly adopt finders fees and is trying to normalise this behaviour which is frustrating.

I think the reason why people want to buy from resellers is as much as they like to complain on these threads about how resellers are rip-offs they probably secretly like to still message these resellers on Instagram because they get caught up on the hype of wanting to find the latest hard to find bag

Another big reason I am wary of *some* of the resellers, especially on Instagram is possible money laundering, this is typical across all luxury brands. They purchase the item in cash in the stores and then resell online and receive an electronic money transfer. Disposing of large volumes of cash is quite easy with luxury prices and the demand most certainly guarantees success in recouping the funds.

The very few items I have purchased previously years ago all gave proof of purchase with cash receipts…

yes this happens a lot as you mentioned but luxury stores dont care if its dirty money as long as they make the sales! I dont buy from resellers especially where the money came from to purchase those luxury goods

Something I thought was quite interesting is the amount of brand new SLGs being sold at fashionphile right now. No wonder the boutiques are low on inventory... I question whether FP buys it themselves or if people buy and hold these to sell to FP right before a price increase to make some money off them.
There are so many though... like 10 brand new ones just on the first 2 pages.

And as shocking is it might seem someone will pay the markup prices. I see card holders listed for $300-$500 over retail and they get sold :confused1:

I am not into buying from or selling to resellers but looking at their fees...anybody who consigns a $600 cardholder would break even only if it sold for a minimum of $900. Fashionphile takes 30% so the seller would get $630 (which is approx what they paid with sales tax). the real win is for Fashionphile...

My original thought was that maybe people bought them, held them for 2 years, and then resold them for a profit. However, I went back to check the date of the pieces and most I saw were from 2020 or 2021... :hrmm:

I know! I don't get it either... it's highly unlikely that a cardholder will increase by $300 or more in one go. I think it may just be an irrational impulsive purchase out of FOMO?! (especially with the unicorn colors) :confused1:

I think that for popular iems that get "discounted" by like 10% off and not sold are taken off the site and then just posted back again.
Yes, I've seen multiple posts of this occurring. I am also referencing classic flap card holders that retail for $550 selling for over $1000 even before it has an opportunity to get discounted. When the first 21K purple card holder showed up it was listed for like $1100. It sold within the day of getting listed. Goes to show that if someone really wants something the actual price doesn't matter.

Chanel doesn't help itself, though. It's such a hassle to find certain pieces that a customer who's interested in a specific color benefits a lot from resellers. Even if it costs hundreds/thousands more, it saves that person days of research, contacting SAs, dealing with reserve lists, uncertainty and all of that. FP takes all of this stress away and instead gives them a 1-click, easy process. As long as Chanel keeps their selling process a chore, people will continue to use resellers. Their model is a gold mine for them, but also a gold mine for resellers.

Agree with what you said! The rat race of buying a Chanel these days drives people to resellers.

The whole situation with resellers made me give up on buying unicorn bags from the boutique. I am not a big spender at Chanel so I never get offered one, even on release day and with the help of my SA. My boutique don't get a lot of the popular unicorns and I still see people from my city selling these bags a week later. I used to be sad about it but I rather don't want to have the bag at all than spending 500+ Premium.

I'm not a big spender at Chanel either. I personally find it exhausting having to spend time building relationships with SAs and also find it meaningless spending money on RTW in the hopes of becoming VIP and getting that so called 'unicorn' bag. I was like you and felt quite sad when I couldn't get the bag I really wanted from boutique and have resorted to using resellers before. However, after the euphoria of getting the bag has passed, I then realized it is quite silly to pay another 1k-2k above retail when this amount of money can be used to buy another item like SLG/shoes etc... The upside from my not so pleasant experience with buying a Chanel bag is that I'm now numb to the next so called 'unicorn' bag and less likely to succumb anymore.

I’m the same I’m really over unicorn bags and I don’t get excited with the seasonal bags or seasonal iridescent leathers anymore and I’m really glad because to me is just a trend and the fad will soon end

I’m pretty sure pre-owned websites like fashionphile they do actually buy brand-new stock themselves and sell it for a premium on the website which I think is really unfair and it defeats the purpose of it being a really true genuine pre-owned website
