Well, there are maybe 2 of the 1000s of designs that have the year (they were designed, not manufactured) on them...

It is tough to date them, because they are reissued, but a few guidelines
- For modern scarves, get copies of the booklets, they will give issue dates for the more recent designs (about teh last 20 years..)
- With no copyright mark at all, then it is 35+ years old
- With copyright next to Hermes Paris, then 20-35 years old
- With tiny copyright hidden in desing, then 15 years or less
- Also , if you are good at colors, then the c/w can give a clue, ie earthtones = 70s, flaming neon hot colors = 2004-2006 issue and so on

:) So if I keep the scarf I just bought for another 20 years, it will become a vintage scarf? Is there anything on the scarf that gives an indication of the year it was designed/made?

Wow! This is GREAT information! I'll take a good look at the vintage lovelies that are hitting my doorstep later this week and next....this is FUN!

Great to know! Thank you.

I'm hoping to buy my first ever Hermes scarf - and I've been looking at the list of reputable dealers. I've seen a scarf I  but it has no care label but in excellent condition - should I buy or doesn't it matter if it's a genuine Hermes ? Thanks.

Hello Jimmychoochoos and welcome. I (and quite a few ladies on this forum) collect Hermes scarves. I have to say not having the care label doesn't bother me, as long as I love the design (and the scarf is not a fake). I think as long as you stick with the reputable dealers you will be fine. I have sometimes bought vintage Hermes scarves with a bit of damage e.g. pulls, slight watermark, missing care label etc and I am always thrileld with them. You do know, of course, there are plenty of fakes on ebay and elsewhere, not necessarily at fake prices either!
Do you have a particular design in mind? (I'm quizzy and obsessive!)
Good luck, I hope your first purchase will make you very happy.

Caretags are useful for 3 things
- Dating a scarf (if it matters to you) since the labels have changed over time
-Determining authenticity (fakers may not get the tag quite right)
-Finally, lack of a tag may reduce the resale value by a bit for newer scarves, but vintage ones often lack the tag so it is no biggie there

There are lots of people who hate the tags and remove immediately since they may show when wearing, so, it comes down to personal preference.

For myself, lack of a tag never stopped my buying an HS

Many thanks for all your replies and the lovely welcome !! I just saw a design I liked with a reputable dealer and it didn't have a care label. Unfortunately it's already been sold - so I missed out - I was going to buy it today  Ah well - another day another scarf.

A portion of my H scarf family (some of which have been getting more action than others lately). There are more, but they're in safe keeping for the moment. So, here we go. (The names of the first and last escape me.):
