Sorry for popping this thread up. But I have questions about customized orders.

Last time when I was in boutique, my SA and I were discussing about how backpacks are really important to me everyday but H is not producing backpacks. She said maybe I should do customized order next time when it's available which is twice a year (I think maybe it's when SOs are processing). She said I could scratch the prototype myself and send it to Paris to be approved but I need to put deposit in advanced.

May I ask if anyone familiar with this procedure, like how deposit is calculated, or will it be part of the 2 bags quota per year? I have never done SO before and I believe I'm not VVVIPs just regular customer. But from what I learned from lots of informative threads, there's no deposit for SO right?

What your SA is offering is a bespoke service Hermes has quietly offered in the past, outside SOs. The service includes items other than bags, including furniture, jewellery and home interiors. In the case of the backpack, you may draw a sketch and add details of what you would like, the submission is made to Paris and there is no charge. It is vetted by Artistic Direction and an estimate given to you regarding the deposit, normally 10% of final cost. When the deposit is paid, the design team will probably make detailed sketches, possibly a mock up bag and you may be invited to meet with them in Paris to finalize the design and leather. The bag could take up to 1-2 years to make and it will be added to the Hermes archives with your name on the records. You will be able to order this design in other colours and leather subsequently. Most of this is what I understand from my own SAs. I do not think it affects your store quota but I would check on that. It's a very exciting offer!

Sorry for being a bit off-topic but Hermes has a backpack this season. I have seen them in my store. It's in barenia and priced at around Euro 10k. My store had a couple but have all been since sold. It has several separate pockets inside and outside. The craftsmanship is exquisite! It comes in two sizes but my store only ordered the smaller size. HTH.

Oh! A backpack in barenia? Any images you can share? I've only found the 2013 backpack (another stunner).

I believe a bespoke order would count as one of your quota purchases but I'm not 100% sure on that. You should ask your SA to be sure.

Definitely! Last time I was in a hurry leaving so I didn't go in details with her. I will ask her next time. Thank you for your advice!

It still amazes me as language is a KEY.;)

About the old good RAC : Hermes RAC stands for Reste A Commander.
Kind of : "still remaining to order"

As far as I know, it worked like this : the store had a number of items( including bags) that they could add to their initial order, after they got confirmation of the podium order. (probably an adjustment to fit into their buying budget after some items would be cancelled, not produced or whatever)

They could use this RAC quota for anything, from ordering a black wallet for a local client , to place a special order Birkin for a VIP, or stock more belts...Depending on the time of the year you would place a SO, your store could order it at podium in their quota, or use the RAC to place it after podium.

I am not sure this still works, and where, though.
However, good luck to all of you for your special orders, no matter when you place it.

ps: Of course it never was rack

H is such a different company doing everything maybe this is one of the reasons why it is unique. LOL

This is such a detailed information that answers all my questions!! It would really exciting if I had a chance to fly to Paris and talk to those artisans face to face!!

Sorry I don't. I am not a backpack person at all so I only just saw one on display and discussed it briefly with my SA.

WOW apparently my SA didn't know about this new backpack! I should better ask her if our store is ordering this style!! A backpack in Barenia is a killer to me!! The 2013 one and Kelly Ado are what I have seen so far. Hope the small size isn't as small as Kelly Ado...

Fingers crossed we can have some pictures (living on an actual island with no luxe stores is no fun, lol). :D

The smaller size is the one I saw in store and it's normal backpack size for good every day use. Not a small bag like the Ado.

I have paid deposits for some of my SO in the past years.
I also have paid 20 % more than retail for some SO bags.

That's so tempting! Thank you for your detailed information!

I see. Apparently I should browse more threads in this spectacular forum!

Deposits are usually not asked for SOs unless the bag is monogrammed, it's an exotic combination, or it's a combo bag that for whatever reason H either thinks is very difficult to make or thinks might not be salable if turned down (ha!).
Bespoke is ALWAYS a deposit although I was told it was 50%.

SOs CAN be more than retail as perlerare says- sometimes it's just the materials - for instance, chèvre is more expensive than Epsom, Togo, Clemence, or Swift, and sellier is always more expensive than retourné. There is also sometimes a charge for contrast stitching that is not approved in the stitching book, especially on, say, a sellier Kelly. If a craftsman is doing a contrast stitch that's very bright, for instance, this is even more work than a normal sellier as it needs to be absolutely perfect. Two colors of stitching (one inside and one out) can also incur a charge. I'm sure there's other customization that runs extra.

I have also heard of Paris charging VVIPs extra for color combinations they found distasteful, as even though they do not wish to lose the client, they don't want to make the bag. This may just be an evil rumor. (Perlerare, this is definitely not you - you have amazing taste!)

This is SO informative! I definitely learnt a lot! Thank you so much QuelleFromage!

In Paris, they ask for a 50% deposit once you confirm the design but no deposit is needed for the sketches. At my local store, they started implementing the 10% design charge (so you pay this before you even see the first sketch) but it can be waived by the manager. I think it just boils down to individual store policy. Hope that's helpful!

My store does this on SO designs which they don't think they can easily sell if the original requester rejects it. I have heard some combos they did this and they were truly yuky indeed.
