Price Increase Update

OK, so I have a silly question - which I think I already know the answer to - if the increase is due to the declining USD, if/when our economy picks up again (let's say it goes back to a more reasonable $1 to 1.25 EUR or something), will H adjust their prices back down? Has a price decrease ever happened historically? Or, more likely, would Europe would raise their prices and the whole bloody cycle starts all over again?

Prices won't go down, but the may slow in the escalation upward. In fact, when the Euro came into being and prices were refigured, there was what was called "Euro creep," and the prices were rounded UP. They said it was for the sake of ease. Uh huh. I've got some ocean-front property in Kansas to show ya.

By the time you take off the VAT and add on duties, you're about even. Then there are the general travel costs. I once planned on going to Paris for a shopping trip, but by the time I added in the extras, I might as well go to my local stores because it was cheaper.

I thought birkin and many other bags were still cheaper in Europe? When it comes to non-H items like clothes and food I agree, it's ridiculously cheap in the US for a first world country in some areas.

I think you got some of it right here. Allthough I don't think the already excisting store will have to suffer that much as they are usually in heavy traffic tourist and economic areas.

When I spoke to my SA at the Wall Street store on Sat, she had heard nothing about a price increase. I told her that some of the West Coast stores were telling their customers that there was going to be one. She told me she would look into it.

There were price decreases, due to the strong dollar in January 2001. It was the year Rencontre Oceane was issued. Prices of scarves dropped from $275.00 to $250.00, GM Cashmere dropped from $750.00 to $650.00. I bought my first Birkin in 2003 for $5600.00.

Its odd, really. I mean fuel has gone up, but lots of companies who ship things lock in their fuel rates in futures. Those companies might be raising the cost of freight though, and that impacts H's bottom line. The other, sort of awful thing is that maybe H wants to make the brand more elite. Back to the luxury exclusiveness that it used to have back in the day. So the higher they price it, the more the middle class falls off, and the less it impacts the truly exclusive rich. I think though, there will be a point when the purchasing of the rich, cannot compensate for the volume purchasing of the middle class.

Unless...we'll be subsidizing their expansions overseas and their retooling for worldwide manufacturing (if they are going to do that. Eek.)

Sigh, its really a shame.

In all due respect, since this information is without attribution, its cant be verified. Has anyone heard this from one of the store managers in the NY stores? Has anyone heard it from DIRECTLY from Robin, Suzanne or Federico?

Birkin Box 35 with VAT included was 5400 on may 25th (see ref. thread), I was quoted 5300 in Paris late february this year. today that makes it 8335 and 8190 $ w/o tax, which makes me wonder why a scarf would be more in europe.. Oh well.

I appreciate this heads up. Now anyone can call if they want, but if I didn't have this info, I would be in the dark about doing that..... Thank you for posting this Guccigal

OK, this is to make you guys feel better. Our current prices here (singapore) are:

90cm scarves: $580 = USD$420

70cm scarves: $470 = USD$340

Twilly: $200 = USD$144

pochette: $230 = USD$166

GMshawls: $1650 = USD$1195

Much more expensive than your current prices. So grab everything while you can, USA prices are a great bargain to me! I'm thinking of asking my friends to buy scarves for me there too. Enjoy the good times while you can!

:crybaby:

I think people are hearing this from actual Hermes salespeople, because it's been discussed for quite some time now. It just means I have to load up on all my dream scarves and small H accessories now before the increase...

:crybaby:

I will probably do the same thing. I will need to buy a pocket squre and a 35" scarf from F/W08 which I like before the increase.

I will forget about saving for a kelly or a birkin. :crybaby:

Thanks for the information, Guccigal.
