I am so sad to have to report that the mania over Birkins and their popularity with 'influencers' and you tubers and wannabe's has put me right off them...I've felt this feeling growing in me for the past 6 months and today I found a really lovely used one at a price within my budget on a reputable pre-loved site and I just went...'nah' and carried on seeking discontinued styles .
I hope this feeling passes because The Birkin was a bag I've loved since it first launched.
I loved it because of its 'cool' association with Jane Birkin who is something of an icon of mine, I loved it because it was under the radar and its quality and relative rarity made it (to my eyes and mind at least) achingly chic.
I loved it because it was big enough to hold my 'stuff' in and looked to be the perfect tote for work and travel carry on bag.
All that feels tainted now..
I'm sorry
I’ve got to say I do (kind of) agree with you. However (and I am biased  ) I can’t help feeling that a worn in slouchy birkin (especially in a larger size) worn with a casual outfit can still look pretty cool.

There’s a pic of a B40 on the wildlife thread a few days ago that sums up my ideal.
I do sometimes feel a little self conscious carrying mine, but I remind myself that
A. A nearly 50 year old women dressed in jeans and converse the majority of the time is clearly not trying to be a Kardashian / influencer wannabe etc.

and B. Despite the fact that a lot of us bag obsessed spend time on here / YouTube/ Instagram etc looking at photos of influencers, celebrities etc. I’m still fairly convinced that the majority of people have absolutely no clue what a Birkin is!
Ps. Did you see the prune swift by any chance? :graucho:

You are so right! And that 40B on the wildlife thread is my ideal too !
I think I was possibly feeling a bit jaded when I wrote my post
having read rather too many threads about people wanting to 'score' Birkins and obsessing over SA relationships and spend thresholds.
I actually dont watch you tubers or follow most influencers but I have noticed that the Birkin has become such a recognisable symbol of late that I feel weirded out by the idea of carrying something that the girl in my subway carriage is going to recognise as a bag costing Thousands.
Funny that you mention the Prune swift if it had been a 35 or preferably a 40 I think I would have had my 'I'm not buying a Birkin til it becomes less of a 'thing' (If it ever does!) resolve crumble.
By the way I'm 61 and work in fashion so I dress up most days for work but in a more edgy designer style (Loewe,CDG,etc) off duty I'm usually more like your kind of vibe so as far from a Kardashian as its possible to be (hell! I only wear mascara and now I'm masked all day not even lipstick!).
I love designer things but dont want to look like I'm being flashy if that makes sense?
I'm scared that the Birkin may look flashy...unless of course I could find one that looks like Janes beat up rock and roll one!

I think as long as I feel secure enough about who I am and what I like, I don't really need to care about whether others see me as trying/ wannabe.
Sometimes though I do see people looking at me a little funny on the tube/bus with a big orange bag or my B30
I've been too traumatised by driving in Knightsbridge and being stuck in traffic for 40 min in a black cab

I think... Just pair it with casual clothes, fold the top flap in and you'll look fantastic...
You can always carry the strap side inwards as well...
I think 90% of the people are too concerned with where they need to go/what they need to do to be that observant anyway

Continue from previous post… How about with B35? Is it quite bright and loud? Which look do you think is better? TIA!

I think either will work well, depending upon the look you’re going after. I think look #1 could be a more subtle look depending on the Twilly. The bag & shoes add a subtle touch.
The second combination can be for stronger look with the brighter bag and adding a brighter shoe (maybe a red tennis shoe?).
(Warning: I’m into matchy/matchy with accessories so it’s likely that my advice is out dated….)

Thanks. Good advice, not outdated at all!

And then I pull up a pic the other day of Carolyn Bessette Kennedy in her slouchy clothes and her IDGAF hair carrying her banged-up black B all over-stuffed like the actual tote bag it is, and I fall in love all over again.

Hello there,
I didn’t want to start a new thread and thought it might bemore appropriate to post here.
Just wondering what you’d wear when you carry a birkin 25 in rose lipstick w ghw please?
It appears to be a beautiful spring/summer colour but as someone said, it could be rather tough to carry. I’d greatly appreciate your ideas/advice please.
Thanks,
M

Were I carrying it in the spring and summer, I'd pair it with an easy dress (or blouse) that features a similar or complementary color in its print design, and keep it carefree with my favorite summer sandal. Some quick examples found on Saks (with links beneath each image):

You could make it more all season with neutral dark or mid range clothes: think of it as a pop of bright color against all balck, charcoal or light gray; bittersweet brown; dark purple; navy; beige/taupe; winter white; even a kelly green for a complementary color vibe.

if you are a bright color person, I would imagine it could go with almost anything

if you wanted to reference mid century modern. You,could even do color block brights with red and orange.

i don’t have a particularly soft girly style, so I would not think to pair it with soft florals like above. JMO though
