Yes! But I've heard diamond prices are dropping 15% next year (can anyone confirm?) so I'm waiting.

I know *nothing* about jewelry. Pretty much all I know I learned here!

^ Have you poked around pricescope.com? Swanky directed me there when I was shopping for an e-ring upgrade; I spent some time just surfing their forums for information...I know there was a thread there about pricing!

If the prices do go down that would be great news!!

Can't wait to see what you eventually decide on - keep the questions coming, we all learn from one another's questions!!

I love my plat scott kay setting, it was worth every penny to me (for both looks and durability) but it does have a different look and feel than gold which may not be preferred by all. I'm not into huge diamonds so it was worth it to us to invest money in the setting, to each their own right;)

The price difference (18K vs Plat) for someone who spends that kind of money on a stone wouldn't be that much of a factor if they can truly afford the stone. Its more preference. 18K gold looks better on some skin tones than plat. Now if they used their home as a ATM, yeah it probably would matter.

Int - I was going to email you. Sotheby's has several stones in their upcoming
Jewlery auction on Dec 9th.

I prefer the look of yellow gold over white gold or platinum due to my skin tone. I'm dark brown and I think gold looks much better on me. As far as I know, it's a personal preference, and there are millions of reasons why some choose one and some choose the other, and at the end of the day I guess it really doesn't matter, since nobody has to wear their ring but them.

Annie, my stone is close to 4 crts and I chose white gold.
I prefer how clean appearing it stays. Platinum dulls quickly and that bothers me since my band is plain.
We did however go w/ platinum prongs since they won't get any wear.
If I later choose a pave setting or soemthing where a design hides some of the metal I may switch to plat.

People will say the little scratches buff out and that you may have to re-dip your gold to keep it white - but those 2 things are equal to me, one isn't better than the other as far as maintenance for me personally.

Oh, about the re-dipping. . . my original Ering was white gold and wore it daily for 9 years and it never needed to be re-dipped, it's resting in my jewelry box still as white as ever.

I love the "patina" of platinum. I prefer that the diamond is what sparkles. My pear and side baguettes are close to 5 carats and were originally set in platinum. I had to have part of the platinum shank removed and a fingermate added - but the stones are still set in platinum.
Tp give you an idea of how rare platinum ls: According to Platinum Guild International, the industry group representing platinum jewelers and the industry, "It is estimated that if all the platinum in the world were poured into one Olympic swimming pool it would be scarcely deep enough to cover your ankles." This is in comparison to gold, which would fill three Olympic swimming pools.

Wow - this is very interesting, thank you for this bit of trivia/info.

I prefer white gold over platinum. Both my anniversary ring and e-ring are set in WG. I do not like the patina that platinum acquires over time. Also, my wedding band is a very heavy comfort fit that is white gold but not rhodium plated...I really like the look of the non-plated white gold.

Palladium is one of the seven platinum metals. Actually, Platinum was not used until 1911. White gold was not used until 1936, so a piece from 1928 that has a stamp denoting 18kt has been reshanked. Platinum is used in Airplanes, and was a strategic metal in WWII, which is why (and when) white gold was perfected and used. Both White gold and Platinum are rhodium (another platinum metal) plated. Platinum is actually "Battleship gray" and is plated to be shiny and white. What you are perceiving as oxidization is the plating wearing off.
As to the original question, platinum is more expensive, heavier and stronger, but you can also use less of it in a mounting, or as someone suggesated, have the cage (where the diamond is set) made of platinum and the rest of the ring made of gold. Platinum will always have a higher resale value, you get what you pay for.

Anyone who tells you what will happen next year doesn't know anything either--at least you are honest about not knowing. If diamonds are not selling, the price will go down--or if a country needs to sell some, i.e. Russia. If the dollar goes down, however, it won't matter--you should not wait to buy something you want (or need) with market fluctuations in mind. Right now there should be great deals out there--people should be negotiating enthusiastically. Antique and vintage pieces are ususally the best deals.

I dont agree with the statment that diamonds will go down in price...actually, I've noticed a increase lately...I think that there is a few law suits in regards to pricing with the Diamond industry and it might have an impact here and there...but, overall...it seems to have gone up...Not that Im an expert....

I like 18k better...the look and overall aging of the metal...alot of plat. can look dull or worn but 18k seems to hold up better...but I like small diamonds and it works for me, if I had bigger I might go with Plat. for the security....just depends on what your looking for...
