Platinum versus white gold

I am looking to buy a diamond eternity band. I went to my local jewelry store and talked to the associate. She said that platinum is more expensive and very soft that white gold would be better. BUT white gold has to "dipped" a few times a year. Also with the eternity bands (having the diamonds all around) the wear and tear banging the diamonds on the table, etc is not worth it. I need some advice on which way to go. Thanks.

Platinum. No doubt. It will require less upkeep. If yo do the math over time, you might pay more for Plat up front (and not really too much more right now) but with all the replatings it will add up.

I agree about wear and tear. I know some folks who can wear full eternity, no problems. I cannot. Too much risk.

If you are willing to buy online, this is the greatest place ever--I got my wedding ring there and it's so well made. I have a Raphael platinum band.

Platinum is a softer metal and not always recommended for the prongs.
You might want to see if you can find a setting that is platinum with white gold prongs.

Plat for sure. Looks better, lasts longer and has a higher quality that will withstand being passed down from generation to generation if you so desire. It is also heavier which I like.

My wedding set is all platinum and NO issues at all. I highly recommend it. My husband has a white gold band and it looks cruddy and needs to be dipped (but he wont and i Might have to smack him).

^Not if you get a half eternity band (they can be resized quite easily) ;)

I vote for platinum.. my wedding set is set in platinum too and I haven't had any problems with it. I love how it patinas and how it easily polishes to brand new.

white gold doesn't need to be "dipped a few times a year" for almost anyone.
I wore my original wedding ring for 9 years and it was never dipped once.
My sapphire/diamond band I've been wearing for 5 yrs and has only needed to be dipped one time.
Just want to put some facts out there :D

Also, I completely agree w/ Gnome, my latest upgrade I did just that - white gold band w/ platinum prongs.

i prefer platinum. my engagement ring and wedding band, which is an etoile style ring with bezel set diamonds all around, no problems at all.

i do have a ruby/diamond half eternity band i wear as my everyday ring, and it is white gold and starting to look like crap. it needs to be dipped. i wish i had just gone platinum on that ring too, but i had wanted to save some money.

actually if it's an eternity band all diamonds, i doubt it would be needing a dip at all. it's the part that rubs on your finger/surfaces that wears away. but with all diamonds, that really won't occur.

Yes, white gold is harder than platinum. But another thing to consider, especially for an eternity band, is the longevity of the metals- white gold wears much faster. To polish white gold, metal is removed (and it needs to be polished every time before it is rhodium plated) To polish platinum, it is more of a "reshaping" process, repositioning the metal that gets pushed around during wear. My main concern on an eternity band would be that in ten years there will probably not be very much metal left holding in those diamonds as it has all worn away, whereas the platinum will still be there holding in the diamonds, especially on the bottom part. Also, under stress, platinum is more likely to "give or bend" a bit, whereas white gold is more brittle and likely to hold its shape until it breaks or until a prong is completely sheared off. No metal is bulletproof, but given the facts I would choose platinum.

I have a ring in both, and to me the white gold seems brighter and attracts your attention more than the platinum does weirdly. Or maybe my platinum ring just needs a clean (jk). I think both are great choices, and you can't really go wrong with either for a ring setting.

i agree! My engagement ring/wedding bands are white gold and after 5 years they are still shiney and bright! A bit scratched... but I find my friends with platinum rings have a duller gray look to them. Also my sister has a rather thick tiffany's rip off engagement ring in platinum and it is SO heavy compared to my solitaire! She has very skinny fingers and it literally has flown off her hand after she shook it or something - it weighs about 3x as much as mine! And one time when it fell one of the prongs cracked open... a lot may have to do with the jeweler and their skill... who knows. Both are good choices, both will need to be polished eventually I think ... I prefer gold myself because it feels less gray to me but that's just me!
