Platinum versus white gold

I dont agree with the statment that diamonds will go down in price...actually, I've noticed a increase lately...I think that there is a few law suits in regards to pricing with the Diamond industry and it might have an impact here and there...but, overall...it seems to have gone up...Not that Im an expert....

I agree I've noticed a price increase as well. I've been looking on bluenile at diamonds & there has definitely been an increase.

As for white gold or platinum i think it's preference. I love it all :graucho:
I really love the weight & density of platinum. I've opted for platinum for my wedding band i like that it feels substantial on my finger. If you know what i mean. :confused1:

My guess is either a cost (maybe they needed to save a bit to bump up the carat size?) or personal preference for gold over platinum.
I prefer platinum for the entire ring, but I would recommend that if you do get a gold ring, that the prongs at least be platinum. I personally wouldn't set a 2 ct stone with 18K prongs.

Sounds beautiful - sorry for the question, but is the ring set in palladium or white gold, or both (I think I am confusing myself - I though Palladium was a seperate metal)? If it is palladium, how does the weight compare to that of gold and platinum. TIA, palladium really intrigues me!!

The ring is 18K palladium white gold (so bot the metals together). Sorry it took me awhile to post back I had to find my jewelry book. Platinum is always heavier than white gold here is a chart for the density:
24K (pure) gold =19.32
14K nickel white gold ranges from 13-14
14K palladium white gold 13.5-14.5
18K nickel white gold 14.5-15.5
18K palladium white gold 15.5-16.5

Platinum
99.9Pt=21.4
95% Pt 5% iridium 21.4
95% Pt 5% cobalt 20.8
90% Pt 10% iridium 21.5
90% Pt 10% Palladium 19.8

All densities come from the "Diamond Ring Buying Guide" by Renee Newman GG

a friend of mine chose 18k white gold...(cost was not an issue for her)

it has a shinier look than my platinum...she hasn't had to coat it or rhodium it or anything...it just seems to maintain its new look

i have also heard 19k white gold is an option

i have seen 14k wg turn yellow-ish on other people

platinum is heavier, and mine has dulled a bit...but i enjoy the heavy feeling of it

good luck!!!

Both my engagement ring and wedding band are set in platinum. To be honest, there was never a specific reason for it. My DH just thought that platinum was more durable -- while it does scratch, unlike gold, it doesn't chip away (from what I've read); instead, the metal is shifted. Also, I've read that some people have had to re-coat (not sure if that is the right term) their while gold jewelry as it may yellow over time.

I think the biggest consideration for most people is cost, since platinum is supposed to be more expensive than gold. And, I know that some people don't like the patina in platinum, although I can't tell the difference. I do like that my ring is a little matted looking (maybe that's the patina).

I was reading through this, and I thought I'd post this question me and my sister has been pondering on. She just got engaged, and her boyfriend bought her a ring that the SA said was platinum, and charged him for the platinum price. But when you look at the inside of the ring, it says "18 k". Now the thing is, the prongs are a whiter color, and the band itself is kind of a gold color, but not really gold, like maybe patina? It looks kind of weird because it's apparently 2 different tones. So what's the case here? Is there a "18 k" platinum? Please help this confused goose. Thanks! ;)

If it says 18k, likely the ring (the part that wraps around the finger) is 18k gold. If it were platinum, the mark would say PLAT or PLAT 950 or PLAT900 which tells how much platinum is in the ring.

Perhaps the ring your sister has...the prongs (the part holding the diamond) and setting itself are platinum? That would be a good thing to clear up with the SA as there could be a significant difference in price from an all platinum ring versus one that is only part.

my jeweller told me that almost all the prongs are platinum even if the bands are gold.

i've also heard that if stones (especially diamonds) were set with gold prongs, the gold would transer onto the stone. i don't know how true that is, but it does make sense to set stones in platinum anyway. i specifically chose 18 kt for my wedding set b/c i don't like the patina platinum gets and i didn't want it to be glaringly white either. i've had my set replated several times for special occasions and it comes out looking brand new each time.

I have two necklaces with gorgeous paladium clasps with diamonds.
My engagement/wedding ring is 24Kt white gold with platinum prongs.
My wedding band is platinum

Truth be told., I have no clue why the different metals were chosen.....guess it was the choice of the jeweler who custom made them/and when I look at them.........I cannot tell the difference. I do know the 24kt is softer and I am quite careful not to bang it against the steering wheel, etc. As far as prices, I don't think the differences are great.

Regarding Diamonds going down in price......somehow, I do not believe this., several friends of my husband who are in the finance field have recommended putting your money into diamonds, original wonderful art and antique gold coins.........somehow, this tells me the price will go up quite a bit on these items..........:heart:H

plat is much heavier and i do not like that on my fingers. it is also much more expensive. if i were to pick between plat and gold i rather go with 24k yellow or 18k white. I am also just fine with plain 14k because i kinda like the light yellowing from wear but its takes years to achieve that =P
