Definately not an expert, but I had a recent experience. I bought my husband Cartier l'heure mysterieuse for Father's Day and it also arrived late and very hot. It did not smell very good and nothing like the sample my SA sent. However the next day when the bottle had "settled" and cooled down it was fine and smelled just like the sample, which is fabulous.
I do think I'm going to order in the cooler months in the future though.

Thank you! Glad your lovely perfume didn't have problems. Great advice to not test them right away, while they're still hot. Thanks!

Perfume newbie needing some reassurance, please.

Two bottles of perfume have been sitting in a FedEx trailer in around 90-100 degree heat for a week now. It could be another few days. I know heat isn't good for perfumes. Please tell me I'm being paranoid and FedEx isn't ruining my perfumes.

Maybe I should do my perfume buying fall/winter/spring...
It's really no big deal. Do you know how they were transported to the retailer from which you purchased them? It's highly likely they did a lot of sitting around in less than ideal conditions. I really, really, really highly doubt they were expedited from the factory to retailers/wholesalers in temperature controlled storage conditions the entire way.

How many times do you try a sample before deciding whether you like it or not?

I just ordered a bunch of samples, and while I wait for them I decided to try White Suede again. The first time I tried it, all I got was powder and light florals. But this time it seemed better, with more dimensions. It is the same season, and I applied it to the same places, so I am wondering what changed. Do you normally have to try things more than once to "get" them and whether or not they work on you? I mean, I won't be trying the ones that were awful again, but this one has gone from meh to like in two wears, and I wonder if it will continue to get better.

Thank you! :flowers: Seems a dose of common sense is what I needed.

It depends. If it's one I hate and have to scrub off - that's it. No more tests. If it's one I love at first smell, that's also easy. If it's a 'like', but I'm not real sure of it, I'll use the full sample. Then if I miss it, and wish I had it, time for at least a small travel size bottle. If you don't mind the scent, then I don't see why not use of the full sample.

Yes, but even when you think you are sure after multiple applications, your olfactory senses and your taste can change, no idea why.

I often try things multiple times before I understand them. As I've said elsewhere, Frederic Malle's line is very much like that for me. It's one of my favorite lines, but the first several times I tried any of them, I didn't like them. Some of them I still don't like because I've found much better perfumes that do the same thing--Portrait of a Lady, for instance--but others, like Musc Ravageur and Carnal Flower, I totally love but hated when I first tried them. Seriously, I had to wash off Musc Ravageur the first time I tried it because it made me want to vomit. Now, though? I really, really love it.

And then there are some perfumes that charm me instantly...and then I realize later that I don't like them nearly as much as I thought I did when I first got a whiff.

I got lucky on ebay and got my hands on a 7.5ml miniature of Cuir Cannage at a reasonable price...
... it does not smell like a Dior leather handbag- at least not to me.
Actually I don´t perceive any leather at all.
But it´s a nice scent, a scent to make me feel good, one that feels natural and comfortable on my skin. Warm and comforting while still being exciting. My untrained nose hasn´t found out yet what actually it smells like...

Yes, it took me some time to understand how people were perceiving leather in it for a while. The accord that Demachy constructed for the leather is finer and much prettier than what I was used to understanding to be leather. It still doesn't smell at all like any purse to me, though.

I think, try chanel cuir de russie. Perhaps that will work for you!

does anyone here have an opinion on 28 La Pausa extrait and whether or if it compares or contrasts favorably to Frederic Malle iris poudre. if So I would love to hear an opinion!

I adore La Pausa and prefer it to Iris Poudre. Don't think it comes in extrait though, only EDP and previously EDT.

LP I got on a recent iris / orris kick where I got 4 different iris fragrances . I have a mini IP from an FM discovery set.

They’re quite different. IP I find very soapy and ironically, with the mix of aldehydes and florals, has a bit of No. 5 vibe. I prefer the definite, rooty orris note in LP whereas IP is more a melange of florals rather than an iris perfume. LP dries down soft and powdery and the orris doesn’t last very long sadly. It's a classy, lady-like fragrance.

HTH!

Thank you! This is very very helpful! I love soapy. In the springtime and early summer I sometimes wear Iris Silver Mist by Maurice Roucel for Serge Lutens. IMO it’s not characteristic of SL bc it lacks that sweet, amber oriental bois vibe. (Of course there are many Lutens without that base too though). I guess it’s also different bc it’s chilly and refreshing.
