I totally would've done/said the same thing as you, it's just a shame your friend couldn't handle your comeback. Maybe it will open her eyes. It sucks that your friendship/trust was compromised that way, but it was messed up for her to talk to you like that.
My girlfriends ALWAYS comment whenever they see me with a new bag. One in particular can be pretty rude about it and says stuff like "Wow, it must be nice to be married to (DH's name)! I should've married him!" - that was just 2 weeks ago at a party. She said that right in front of her husband! I felt bad for him, but at the same time her husband would never buy her a designer bag, unfortunately. That same guy used to "tease" me on my bags, until I got back to him about how much he spends on guns, cars and bikes - I told him, if you were me, you'd have 5x as many bags as I get in a year - that's how much he spends on his "hobbies". That shut him up
But it gets real uncomfortable when they keep asking how much I pay for my bags. I start to get self-conscience 'cuz I don't want to make it look like I'm showing off. I actually hide my bag from them when we go out! It's bad enough she asks for prices, and I actually lie and say I got them cheaper, but it's worse for them to assume I can't afford to buy them myself. If my DH bought me a bag, it was for my birthday or special occasion/holiday. DH says next time, I should say I paid a million dollars for them!
I usually change the subject and brush off her comments, but from now on, if she says another rude comment, I'm just gonna play along and have a smart-alec comment back.
