I agree you should buy the bag you love, if you can afford it, who cares about the cost. HOWEVER, higher cost does not always equal higher quality. I own a crap load of bags [125 at last count, over fifteen years of buying and receiving higher end bgs] that range in retail from $300 - $6500. the majority of my bags are Dooney and Bourke, and my Dooney's stand up in quality [and many times exceed quality] of my Gucci's, Louis' and Burberry's. So please don't spend more feeling like you are getting more, what you're paying for at higher end retailers are the names....PERIOD!! But me, since I love my Dooney and Bourke, I'd pick the 4 $500 over 1 $2000 most everyday.
I absolutely love my limited edition Gucci Stirrup Top Handle Bag, but it's not appreciably different in quality than my Dooney & Bourke Alto Viviana. I paid thousands of dollars because I absolutely LOVE the style of the Gucci, and can't find it anywhere else. My $1000+ bags will likely last me forever, but you better believe, my Dooneys will too, and all will age beautifully and look as good in ten years as they look now.
