Back at our hotel getting ready for tea with my ladies, but a quick (not iphone-typed, and therefore hopefully less error-ridden) update on how it all went.
The sale was CRAZY this year. More pushing and shoving than ever before, and they had a new system for everything from getting into the queue to browsing to buying, and IMO the changes are not so good. ):
The queuing system once you get up the escalator has changed, meaning instead of two free-for-all mad dashes, there are now three-- once the building doors are opened, once after the escalator and once you get into the sale hall. During these times, everyone is trying to get ahead in the line and it is very possible to be badly hurt-- at the escalator, mum, Perigord and myself were all squashed into various things-- poles, security guards, walls, etc, and it really wasn't very pleasant.
The other big change is that instead of being able to cram scarves etc. into bags at the counters and then decamp to the mirrors later to pick through your selections and make exchanges with friends, you now choose your scarves and they take them away as they do with leathers and jewellery. I absolutely HATE this change as the scarf area is very narrow and crammed with people, and there is only one mirror which is right behind where the security guard stands. It means it is now very difficult to decide on scarves and I think will lead to mistake purchases and reckless desperation buying.
Or perhaps not! The new limit is five scarves per person. Leathers is two per person, but happily the jewellery counter limit is now five items per person.
Each of the busy counters (bags, belts, leathers, scarves and jewellery) now has a queuing system implemented, which is excellent and prevents SOME of the pushy-shovey, although not quite enough-- a tall and quite unpleasant queue-jumping lady tried to use poor DM's head for an elbow rest several times. :/
Jewellery choice was okay, although enamel bracelet designs were limited. Lots of wallets available at leathers, although alas, no Karos and no Kelly Long wallets (several shorter ones and Bearns, though). Scarf selection was good, and stocks seem reasonable; unfortunately my scarf prowess is not sufficient to say what seasons the majority were from. Belts were cleaned out by 9.30. Bags were cleaned out by 9.05. Shawl selection was good, although no rarities/crazy grails that I saw.
For all of our troubles, we did get some lovely things, which I will reveal once I am home. I also have an INCREDIBLE story to tell about a lovely event which occurred at George V that I am looking forward to sharing, but for now I must dash out for tea! Been up since 3.15am, so tired-- And early night for Nez tonight, I think!
