Owning multiples - mad or mad genius?

I struggle with this. I want to be conscious of sustainable, functional consumption And balance that with the sheer appreciation of the aesthetic. To appreciate (and buy) but not waste. And not to feel guilty or overthink every purchase either.

IMO there is a difference btwn a true back up duplicate and buying a style/size/item that you use and adore in different colors/material or hw, so they essentially fulfill different roles in your wardrobe. I tried many different styles over the years to get to that point.

2 BV Venetas (1 black, 1 brown), 2 BV Olimpias (1 black, 1 brown), and 4 Longchamp le Pliage totes (2 black, 1 brownish, 1 blue). Everything else is singular (but still mostly black and brown).

I only own multiples of one bag, the Coach Nomad crossbody. I love everything about it so have it in three colors: aubergine, burnished saddle, and dark cherry. Eventually I would like to acquire it in the dark denim color, as well. At one point in time I would have thought owning multiples of the same bag was foolish, but why not if they work for you?

The Nomad is (was) a great bag! I had it in butterscotch, and like you, it was one of the only bags I would have considered multiples of. Great leather, great functionality, great price! But my lifestyle changed and I started to only need smaller bags...after it sat in my closet over two years I let it go.

Interesting thread! I’ve never considered owning multiples because I love variety. But I can totally appreciate the “mad genius” (as you say) of having a signature look and sticking with something that really works for you. Maybe I’ll find that one day!

When I like the style of a bag, I usually have multiples of the bag. I have many multiples (different colors of the same bag) and I'm happy with it. If I know / see a bag works for me, I tend to buy at least another color. The only one I love and didn't buy in an other color is the YSL Nikki (I have it in black and the other colors never spoke to me). Owning multiples of a bag is nice and you can switch the colors to match your outfit of the day. I mostly wear black and I'm not into shoes so my bags are the only accessory to elevate or not my outfit.

I have 4 YSL Muse II in various colourways, two YSL besace (black and grey suede), 3 Fendi large whipstitch baguettes in 3 colours (red, brown, cloud blue), 2 small baguettes in the same size but totally different, 2 Mansur Gavriel buckets (black and cognac), 3 YSL downtowns, Miu Miu pink and red, 2 Balenciaga Hip, 3 Paloma Picasso small cross body, numerous le Pliage in all colours I like

all are really different when I think how I carry them, different vibe and styling

I totally get why having multiples in different colors works for a lot of folks. I’ve rarely been able to do it tho. Time after time, when I buy a second of a bag I love, the thrill just isn’t there the second time. Or if it is, I end up selling the first one because I like the second color better.

Right now I have a Tory Burch bag in both a regular and small size... and I’m going to sell the bigger one.

I do have the BV Pouch in both the regular and mini size and like them both.

I don't have multiples since I have only just started getting into luxury bags and even getting more than one bag. However, I am really loving crossbody bags, and I'm in love with my Gucci Marmont. I'm even eyeing the Marmont in pink as I love the style, and the pink is perfect for the colors I usually wear. As someone who used to buy big bags and would fill it with unnecessary things just because I could, I now like the idea of carrying only my essentials. Medium crossbody bags are a good size for that, and my shoulders are thanking me for it. If it fits your style and daily life, buy the multiples.

4 Behno Ina's (2 regular, 2 mini) I love the style, and brand! Black, apricot, orchid, avocado.
3 Rebecca Minkoff MiniMac's. Great size for me, and I love the style. Black with rainbow hardware. Purple with gold hardware. Green with silver hardware.

2 Bottega Veneta Nodini's. Love the size, and BV colors. Purple, rose gold.
2 Maison Margiela Glam Slam camera bags. Smooshy! So smooshy! Black, rainbow.
2 Marc by Marc Jacobs Percy Q's. Easy grab and go bag. Violet, copper.
2 Coach Madison Hailey's. Love the style. Black with silver hardware. Purple with brass hardware.

For me, if I like a style, I usually like to collect it in several colours. I have several multiples, and they all feel like different bags to me.

5 Balenciaga Cities: 2 blacks (different sizes and hardwares), navy, purple, green
3 Proenza Schouler PS1's: purple, burgundy, brown
2 Aspinal of London Mayfair's: green, burgundy
2 The Row Wander's: black, taupe
