Ugh...
I just wonder - if they put so much effort into imitations and clearly their craftsmanship isn't too awful either, why not start their own brand?
.
The short answer is; there's a market for it.
Now for the reasons behind it: A lot of people may like the look of a certain designer brand's handbags, but are unwilling to pay the sometimes outrageous prices. Therefore, the replica industry steps in to fill this gap and profits from it - it's simply business to them, and a very profitable one at that. However, please notice that I said the
replica industry; which is a legitimate and legal endeavor - creating a replica is not illegal, nor immoral, as long as one represents it as such. Also, a lot of the companies that do manufacture replicas also manufacture their own brands and do Original Equipment Manufacturing for other companies - which goes back to why these replicas are sometimes so good in the first place, as these companies take great pride in their work.
The
counterfeit industry is a whole different kettle of fish from what I mentioned above though, and is highly illegal and unethical.
Unfortunately, the more serious counterfeiters do often buy from the replica manufacturers and then, in turn, try to sell the replicas as the real thing. The replica manufacturers have no control over what someone else does with their products once that person has bought them. Therefore, it's really out of their hands and not their fault - nor are they liable for it.
The actions of the counterfeiters has given the replica industry an unfortunate, and totally undeserved, bad reputation. And, people - unaware of the true difference between the two industries - start referring to the replicas as "fakes"; when in fact they were only ever intended to be replicas in the first place.
