I haven't tried to recreate the problem after the third time it happened but basically the loop spring somehow opened and the strap came off the bag. The last time it happened the bag ended up on the asphalt and I just gave up and put it back in the box. I see the SA on Friday. He didn't seem totally surprised so it made me think that's it's not completely uncommon.

If anyone is still interested, I finally got an update about repair status. Apparently NY didn't find an issue but they sent it to Paris for new hardware. My SA can't even be sure I'll get it back this summer.
