Ode to the bolide

I was googling pics of the Rainbow Bolide and stumbled upon this. I thought it was only the Sunrise and Sunset. Apparently they released this last year, but there's no name on the Sotheby's auction listing where this picture is from, apart from it being a Rainbow Bolide.

It's 30 cm and in epsom leather. The colors are bleu saphir, bleu frida, and rouge sellier. It is lined in rouge sellier lambskin leather.

Incredible.

Now that I like (and I don’t even really like this updated design…nor epsom….but I love the blues!)

Does anyone know why Hermès doesn’t sell Bolides in leathers they use to make them in, the ones that their customers adore? Just charge more if thats what’s needed to make these type leather bags. I read the leather box is a favorite.
This is my guess
in the early and mid aughts, the rigid bolide made from heritage leather like box, fell out of favor.
many newcomers to the brand preferred the slouch of a more relaxed bolide, and also the ease of pebbled leather
a structured, smooth heritage leather was considered your mothers or your grandmothers bag.
while heritage leather like box can be refurbished well, the new clients also wanted bags that kept a new look
another thing to consider is that with the increase in prices, there are more clients examining every bag ‘imperfection’ with a magnifying glass, and it may be possible that box or other heritage leathers show those variations more readily?

i have read (I don’t know if this is true) that epsom is pressed from skins that are actually slightly imperfect box.
with the rise nowadays of mini bags, structure is on the rise again, and epsom is simply less expensive to produce and takes color easily. There are plenty of box hides around; my custom bag maker (Duret.com) has shown me vintage box hides and others, but it seems easiest to source epsom.

JMO and of course I would welcome correction on any of these points

Very interesting @880

What is a heritage leather or what does it mean? :flowers:

I do love Bolides Clemence leather but I did not like it in epson, but I do love epson in a wallet.

adding:
I guess Hermes does what’s best for each bag .. I am sure they know what they are doing

Heritage leather: Box; vache Naturale; barenia; Leathers historically used by hermes for saddlery etc that can be refurbished by spa. These leathers will scratch, show marks, and patina (develop a gloss) eventually.

if you do a search, you may find a more comprehensive list and a better explanation .

This is what a H artisan told me during a leather event several years ago. Epsom is stamped imperfect Boxcalf.

I have been thinking about asking my sa for a bolide after admiring all of your beautiful bolides. I’m debating between mini and 25. I recently saw a YouTuber hey Chenny talk about her mini bolide in a video about her collection. Her bolide looked bent out of shape and kind of beaten. Is this normal for the bolide to look lumpy? Or perhaps this is a mini bolide issue or maybe it’s the leather? I like for my bags to mostly keep their structure. If this isn’t the right forum for this question admin please let me know. Thank you.
