Ode to Silver

This is a great question! It's odd because I have never had to polish my Sterling CDC and it always looks gleamingly perfect! My other pieces-- SS Kelly Dog, Galop collection, etc. need to be polished as they do form a patina as well as tarnish. All are stored in the same way. So unless I'm wrong and someone knows better, I think that majority of H sterling pieces do in fact need to be polished.

My pieces have the opposite effect! My CDC develops a slight tarnish after a weeks, but the Galop GM is more resistant. The rest of my collection... really varies. But now I keep my silver in clear ziploc bags so I don't need to polish them often (or at all).

Tarnish really depends on many factors (how often you wear them, how it reacts to your skin, contact with water and perfume/skincare products, air quality, etc). I have heard that some pieces are plated with rhodium. Perhaps it's up to the particular workshop that produces a certain design.

I had heard about the rhodium plating as well. I store everything in its original H box but for sterling clear ziploc bags are a great idea! Thank you!

Presenting my "new to me silver bracelet". I have looked everywhere and can't find the link design anywhere or find anything else with nut charms. Or, at least I think they are nuts. Looks like an almond and a hazelnut to me. Any info would be gratefully received.

Does Hermes silver tarnish or is it coated?

H silver is not coated. it is sterling silver with 92.5% silver and rest is alloy mix which we don't know the exact composition. But I personally find H silver piece tarnish a lot less than say Tiffany pieces, which are not coated with Rhodium either. I keep all silver pieces in small pouches and tie the string very tightly. A lot of the tarnish is because of the air it is exposed to. Yes, oxygen oxidase them.

Today my Farandole bracelet fell off my wrist without me noticing it. I almost had a heart attack when I discovered it wasn't on my wrist at the end the work day! 😱 I started going thru every meeting and place I had been that day in my head and thinking too many places to make inquiry 😓 Then luckily I spotted it in a corner on my office floor 😅🎉🎊

This was the second time it fell off and I didn't notice it this time because the floor is carpeted. Did anyone have a similar experience?

That happened to me once with my Chaine d'Ancre bracelet but I was sitting down and it ended up in my lap. I'm very mindful now when I wear it.

So surprised that this can so easily happen, as the toggle is so big! Good to know as I always assumed this closure was very secure. So glad you both found them, and that they both had a soft landing! Thanks for sharing.

I'm very surprised too, especially since my Chain d'Ancre bracelet is so hard to fasten and even harder to get off! But it might have something to do with how loose or tight we wear the bracelets. I like my bracelets, especially with a big toggle, to fit fairly close to my wrist so there's not much sliding around and jingling. I can imagine, especially with the Farandole (big toggle on a thinner chain), if it's loose, then conceivably the toggle could slide out when angled just the right way. Thank goodness in both cases, the bracelets were not lost!

Glad you recovered yours too. It's a bit unsettling that there is no solution other than being mindful about it

It happened to me aswell with one of my Chaine d'Ancre bracelets: it usually happens when the bracelet is a bit loose..... I had one of the links taken off (it was 1 link longer than my other ones) and now it's fine. It also happened to me years ago with a Dodo Pomellato gold bracelet which had the same togle closure, unfortunately I lost it and only noticed it wasn't on my wrist when I got back home:sad:
