I used docride's barenia/unfinished leather spa kit for my vintage barenia B, it works wonders. I also got some conditioning wipes and use that whenever I feel the leather is too dry. I would recommend, easy to get on eBay too. I have never tried the saddle balm though.
That's great to know, thank you :) I may well order docride's kit, especially as you're getting good results! The only draw back is the postage time, costs and custom charges, but failing finding something in the uk I will go with that.
I've posted the question on her thread anyway, but I believe she is away for a few days.
I'm really tempted to try the Saphir renovator as I was naughty and tried a tiny amount on the back of the strap. Results were good, but I'd like to check it won't have a detrimental effect on the leather in the long term before I go ahead and do larger panels. It didn't darken the colour either which I believe the saddle balm will do. Ideally I'd just like to lightly moisturise rather than darken.

Your bag really is superb (more to kill for than to die for) - just wait until you get a response from DocRide.
It already has 20 years patina and built up protection.
I too am in UK and it's a shame that Docride's products are not as easy for us to get as Saphir.
(A Fine Pair of Shoes is an excellent source for Saphir)

Lol, I got my Saphir renovator from a fine pair of shoes after you mentioned it for box calf :) it moisturised so beautifully that I'm now tempted to try it on everything! Worked a treat on my winter work boots too! So thank you :)
I'm glad you like barenia Kelly, I'm totally in love with this bag, scratches, marks and patina. I'm such a saddo that I tried a tiny bit of the Saphir on the strap, left it for a couple of days, tested to see if it looked and felt the same, tested a little finger nail scratch to see if it rubbed out (it did), then dripped a tiny drop of water on it (mark gone in 30 minutes or thereabouts). I guess I'm just a bit desperate (and maybe slightly mad) to take her to Paris next month and not worry about using her (within reason). I'll just feel happier knowing the leather is sturdy and moisturised. I can live with scratches and stains. I'll try to be good and hold off doing anything :)

Moisturizing the leather will absolutely darken it, no matter what you use. I definitely would not use Saphir on Barenia. It has much more oil and is more liquid than Saddle Baume, so the leather will soak it in faster. If I recall, Docride warns of over conditioning Barenia because it can become heavy, soft, and overly pliable when it absorbs too much conditioner. Please, just enjoy your beautiful bag and don't stress out too much about conditioning it right away. If you are going to Paris soon, definitely take it to the craftsman to have it evaluated. They'll tell you definitively if it needs work or not, and surely, they will carry the Saddle Baume there.

Ok, thank you :)

Finally my pre-loved Barenia Evelyne from 2000 arrived. I bought it from a Japanese seller and am happy the condition is as shown on the pics. I'm glad it already has a patina and scratches. Less worries for me

I'm just surprised that It's stiffer than I expected. I guess it won't get any softer with use (like Clemence) as it's already quite old, right?

And would you suggest conditioner judging from the pics or should I leave it as it is? I don't mind it darkening, I actually love the aged look on leather like this.

Congrats, it's beautiful! I have a Barenia Kelly from 1999, and like you, I bought it because I wanted the leather to already be patina'd.

I'm not sure I can speak to the stiffness -- my Kelly is still very structured, but the sangles are very soft and pliable from use and age. Maybe it has to do with the thickness of the leather? I haven't done a thing to mine. Maybe ask DocRide over in the Vintage Bag Nightmares thread -- she'll know just what to recommend.

I'm jealous! I want to buy from Japan but the customs here is just a bummer. I'll just regret it. lol
But congrats! your evelyne is beautiful!

Thank you! Are you in Europe too? I had to pay slightly more than 25% of the sales+shipping price to customs, but it was still a bit less than what you would usually pay for a Barenia Evelyne (was an auction). If there had been no customs fees and taxes it would have been a great bargain lol

Yes I am  but I fear it would be more than 25% when I buy. Danish taxes are so severe.
