I think 4 is okay (2 in each lobe), but any more is crazy-- in the lobe, I'm not counting the top of the ear cartilge or the tragus or anything like that. I'm talking strictly lobes. I would hesitate to call it "trashy" because to each his own. If you have a great pair of earrings, you only need two holes (one in each lobe).
I have had 4 holes (2 in each ear) for many years and I rarely bother to wear earrings in the second hole. Also, whether it is your first piercing or your fifteenth make sure the piercer is not an idiot and double-triple-QUADRUPLE check the little marks they make on your lobes before piercing.
I can't remember my first ear piercing or my second set of holes, but I know I didn't bother to check, I just trusted the piercer. Big mistake.
I found out there was a problem one night when, on a whim, I decided to get a third set of ear holes with my friend. The piercer did her ears, then I got in the chair. She studied my lobes and said she refused to pierce my ears. I asked why and she said it was because whoever did my second set of holes did a sucky job and they were very uneven. She said a third set of holes would just accentuate the uneven-ness!
I never even noticed it before! But then I really looked in the mirror and saw they were indeed crooked. It didn't crush my world, because as I said, I rarely wore earrings in my second set of holes. Now, I never wear earrings in that second set of holes. The asymmetry is glaring, now that I know it's there.
I am just posting this as a warning to people to be really vigilant when/if you get it done, especially if you do it in the friggin mall. Too often we just trust the piercer when they are doing something so "easy" as an earlobe. That was my mistake and I have lopsided piercings to show for it.
