In general, rappers are going to claim to be the greatest and have the crown especially if they're on a run. Most songs, it's just general competition rap claim staking. Nicki has been claiming everyone is her son for years now and she's been shading all female rappers; she doesn't call anyone by their name since she's just shading everyone. They all take stabs at each other....most times no one loses sleep over it since it's part of rapping. Since All the Way up blew up, Nicki started taking direct jabs at Remy. (It's clear that Nicki wants to make sure she has her own lane unchecked especially since she's never been tested.) At some point, Nicki assumed Remy had some beef with her. since Remy continues to say she's back to take the crown yadda, yadda, yadda. Typical rap ish....Nicki felt threatened clearly. Remy cleared it up and said on the radio she will say someone's name if she has a problem with them. Then Nicki did a collab with Gucci and Jason Derulo where she took very clear shots at Remy (Charlamagne said Nicki called him about not acknowledging her verses). That was the last straw for Remy and she felt she had to respond.

ETA: I'm just here for good hip-hop. From Remy to Swizz and Blaze to Mysonne...it's been a beautiful education in real hip-hop for the past few days.

It can't be from Dirty Money (or 2007)....no one crowned Remy, Kim still owned it, so that opening line where she says run the crown like Chris Brown or something like that doesn't make sense. Plus, the female rapper landscape was dry at the time...it was just Kim and Foxy who were both on the last leg of their careers....that's why the lane was open for Nicki.

I kinda chuckle when Wendy, rollingstone and billboard have to explain it to the suburban kids meanwhile they're so not in the loop and just creating ish.

Makes sense... Nicki's basically been the only female in the game for a while now.

Speaking of Foxy, Oh Yeah stays on repeat and every time I hear that song when I'm out it's over LOL.

Hold up! You're talking about 'dis tracks', right? Which is a short form for disrespect.

What on earth is a dissemination track? And diss? Is this some new thing I've missed?

Dissemination means to share information widely (circulate). I personally wouldn't be upset if someone wanted to disseminate information about me widely as long as they don't dis me.

#genuinely confused #feeling_out_of_date_with_you_youngsters!

Trying to make sense of it all? I gave up a few pages ago. I'm too old for that BS. I'll just sit here with my wine and make stupid comments and Prince GIF's.

Diss not dis. Only the folks who need to use urban dictionary or Wikipedia to define it thinks it's short for disrespect. If you're dissing somone, youre dismissing them. And the galaxy s7 keyboard has a mind of its own. I don't always catch the change it makes to words when typing fast or longer post; if I don't edit it before the time limit, it's stuck. It doesn't like emcee either so I just have to type MC.

But diss in the hip-hop slang has always been spelled 'diss'.

Sorry for the confusions...my bad.

ETA: to add to the confusion....you can also 'son' someone which is disrespect but not really a diss. If you 'son' them in their head aka mush, you're asking for a fight. But you can also call someone 'son' which is not disrespectful. Then again you can call someone your 'son' and that's the highest level of disrespect. I sometimes wish the internet didn't open up hip-hop/urban/AAVE so much. Lol.

LOLOL. I just got dissed! I don't read the hip hop dictionary. In fact, I know nothing about hip hop, but that it's presumably rooted in street and prison culture. But, I do know a lot about street and prison culture (outside of music, which ain't my thing, besides occasional gossip).

The predominate theme in street cultures is respect. Disrespecting someone - like calling a dude a ***** in prison - can get you a blade or your head smashed open. That's why I was confused: writing a song about someone being a tool, a song that you hope will be played a million times, isn't exactly dismissing them, it's disrespecting them.

LOL. It doesn't really matter how someone interprets it to be honest....what matters is that the context is understood. Plus internally we don't define slang in AAVE when speaking...it's about context; it doesn't get defined until it needs to be translated for the suburb kids.

The intent of a diss track isn't necessarily that it will be played a million times....it's strictly to dismiss somone's career out of existence. If it gets played a lot then so be it but it's purpose is to prove that you're the better MC. If you interpret it as disrespect and I interpret it as dismissal from the class, doesn't matter...either way it was effective.

And, it will take a full conversation to discuss what hip hop is rooted in but the street/prison culture is a fraction of what makes up hip-hop but that is not what it's rooted in...my friend actual has a great course that he teaches on hip-hop and we've discussed a lot doing a web series which might be a good idea.
