Why don't sales associates chase after thieves? Safety. Plain and simple. If a person is brass enough to steal, then what makes anyone think they may not be brass enough to physically hurt someone that tries to stop them from their crime?

actually i am pretty sure that's what the security team is for. the SAs don't chase after people who steal purses themselves because that is not part of their job description. malls and department stores have surveillance cameras and security guards on duty and they are usually very successful in catching people who commit grand theft.

I understand the reasoning behind tethering the bags, however, for me, it takes all the joy out of the shopping process. The wires at the SF NM are so short you can barely get a look at many of the bags and the store is often understaffed which means hanging around waiting for an available SA. This is especially frustrating if you have a regular SA who happens to be tied up with another client, as the random SA who unlocks the bag expects to get credit for the sale. Expect to get the evil eye when you explain you already work with so and so. I also noticed a couple of bags already had scratches from the short, tight wires rubbing against them. It's sad that NM has to resort to this. I know the system will deter theft, but it's also going to reduce sales. Hopefully they'll come out ahead...

I think they can't be all that to successful if they are chaining them to the displays. I did go to the NM Chanel Boutique in WP yesterday for the first time in a long time and yes I was surprised to see the bags on display with these plastic cords around them. The plastice ties definitley take away from the beauty that it showed when bags were free standing. It is what it is. Thats the world we live in. As horrid as it is for us, shoplifting and
thievery can't be stopped no matter how sophisticated our technology is becoming.

I know it's a justifiable security measure, but I'd find it a real bummer. Since I'm a potential customer and not a thief, I'd feel pressured into a purchase by asking for the merchandise to be unwrapped so I can see it. Psychology.

I feel the same way. i need to be able to try the bag on over my shoulder and in my arm and look at interior. I asked to see a bag and the SA kept staring at me whiel i looked at it and i could not look at the other bags so i just put the bag on hold ( i do not think i will buy it though; but the look the SA gave me was so intense) I always place the tissue bag inside the bag and make sure that the tabs are all zipped up for next person to look at it. I am shocked to hear NM is doing this though. Hopefully the one in white plains is nto b/c i plan on looking at some items and possible picking up some items next weekend. Overal, how do they honestly expect people to test drive the bag in store

Years ago I went to Bloomingdales and as I was walking in the woman infront of me had an empty Bloomies Brown Shopping Tote and she opened it as she was walking in. I knew she was going to steal something. She walked right over to the Coach bags and there were about 5 bags on a bar and they were locked, she instaneous opened the lock, I ahve no idea how, took all the bags off and headed towards the corner. I quickly notified the 2 sales girls who were busy chatting and the called security. The folowed her but I left before they got her.

It's a fact of life that people steal. I worked in retail and inless we actually saw someone take something then there was nothing we could do and we were only to notify management. Ther eare actual groups that go to malls to steal, it's how they make a living.

I would hate to think someone test drove a bag in the store and put it back for me to buy....

i don't understand what you mean :confused1:
Are you saying you wouldn't want to buy a bag knowing someone else touched it or put in on their shoulder? Because the reality of it is that they are touched and petted by many people, chained up or not.

Well if I am going to buy an expensive bag I would not want to see it walking around the store on someone's shoulder. I have bought an expensive pair of jeans and when I was home someone had stuck a dirty tissue in the pocket. So I am happy when the SA is close by to make sure the bag isn't handled too much. Some people think it's OK to get a bag toss it under alot of stuff that could mark it in the store and then stick it back on the rack. And lets be honest some people shop while drinking and eating.

Okay..now I understand what you are saying however this is something that can't be avoided altogether. SA can't really take the bag away till the customer is done with it. SA can try to say give it back or are you going to buy it or not and automatically they may lose a customer. Furthermore, I don't care how much of bag enthusiasts we can be, there really isn't any need to walk around an entire dept with a bag to see if it fits or not. Everything that we buy in a store wether it be a local 5 and dime or a high end dept store, all items have been handled by many dirty hands. I don't think NM, Saks, Bloomies or any other store are chaining their stuff down for sanitary purposes. That's the farthest thing on their mind.
