Neiman Marcus has the bags chained to the wall!

I have some experience with this, since one of my good friends used to manage theft prevention at a high-end dept store a few years ago.

Theives are ANGRY, sometimes very violent people. If an SA follows a theft out, or demands the merchandise back (not a guard, but the SA) they are frequently hurt, screamed at, and almost always pursued later once the crime is over, even if a cohort of the theif has to come and do it since the theif was locked up! Seriously. SA's are then working in fear they will be accosted in the parking lot, esp after hours, or hurt directly in the store... even have customers blow up at them to get them fired for nothing in retribution.

These theives commonly work in pairs, or more... a lookout, or cohorts that think nothing of running to the theive's aid or hurting the SA while the theif gets away.

When it comes to tethers, I'm alllll for it. It encourages thoughtful buying (the Auntie Anne preztel butter hit home for me!) and less losses from theft. If I truly want to handle or see a bag, I'll let an SA come over and help me. Sure, I may have to wait a moment, but the end product will be better protected, cost less overall, and won't come at the threats of some poor SA who has saved it from a smash and grab.

In other words, kind of closer to environment friendlier!

All retailers have a huge problem with shrinkage, and managers can get in huge trouble with LP when losses exceed what was expected. With the economy the way it is, I expect those losses will only get worse. Major department stores have had their furs and, later, their leather coats wired for years now, so I don't see it as that big a difference to have the bags wired as well. It is less expensive and less space restrictive than having all bags in glass cabinets.

I'd rather stores do what they can to protect themselves from loss so I am not paying for the merchandise that's stolen as well as my own (higher prices and profit margins with built-in amounts to cover LP).

They probably were the reason why someone was able to commit a crime that day or that afternoon.

Neiman Marcus sex scandal

Fast times at Northbrook Court!

According to the Chicago Tribune, two employees of Neiman Marcus in Northbrook, IL, were fired when a security camera caught them doing the the horizontal mambo on the premises.

You think they slunk away, tails between their legs, hoping they wouldn't be arrested for semi-public indecency? As if!

This is America, and in America, where there's a sex tape, there's a lawsuit.

Steven Chalem and Victoria Miranda, who got busy in the loss prevention office on two separate occasions, are suing Neiman Marcus, saying they were videotaped illegally.

"Both Chalem and Miranda have been unable to find jobs in the retail loss prevention industry since their firings" says the lawsuit.

Well, they'll always have Northbrook.

^^Come on people! Ridiculous! Maybe NM should countersue them for potentially exposing other employees to biohazards. If I were a NM employee, I would like to know which table or chair they got busy on so I don't sit my lunch on it!

I don't mind the handbags having the theft deterrent wire on them or being locked in glass cases. What I do have a problem with is when they are understaffed and you have to wait a ridiculous amount of time for someone to get the bag or coat for you. Now that royally pisses me off.

This is one of the reasons why I am scared to buy a bag off of Ebay. It's not only because of the risk of it being fake, it's also the fear of someone who has stolen it and then its selling it for free profit.

What a controversial topic! But I agree that in some instances (demographics of area, size of security staff, functionality of security tags, etc) wires are definitely necessary!

OR they could do what Chanel in SoHo does... really really REALLY heavy doors that you need BOTH hands to push open! Hahaha, any would-be thief would just bounce off like they do in cartoons.

^^ thats funny, can i ask have any of you ever worked in retail? i have and its blooooody hard work :sweatdrop: some customers have really high expectations and forget that the sa is only human. stores only put the cords on bags and other high end products to prevent theft (like many of you have already said) this is out of the sa's control so when i read some of the comments for eg the comment #8 i have a question??? Do you know that when stock gets stolen the customers end up paying more for the product to compensate the loss? Do you really want to pay more for the same product because some bone head went on a stealing spree ? Also as roe said, they can and do sell this stuff how would you feel if you bought something on ebay or anywhere that was stolen. that is just helping the black market and to me thats the same if not worse than buying a fake. :nono: :cursing: :pout: Sorry but thats just how i feel. i go shopping to have fun and want to enjoy it just like you do but with all those crimanals out and about thats just the way it goes.:D
