Neiman Marcus has the bags chained to the wall!

I have seen this almost everywhere with true high end bags...by that I mean in the 1k+ range. Doesn't even bother me in the slightest. Really ladies, I know some may be offended by this, but whether we would do it or not, you know there are people out there so disrespectful that they would put on lip gloss, wipe a glob off the side of their mouth and pick up a bag that you or I may end up getting home and noticing a nasty spot on. (or wipe their nose, for that matter)This would be a lot less likely to happen if they had to ask to see the bag. I am ok with glass cases. If you are seriously looking at buying something, ask to see it. If not, then just enjoy looking at it, but I prefer that you don't handle the expensive bag that I may end up buying. JMHO, of course I am a little OCD about germs, so that probably sways my opinion on this subject:nuts:

I was at a local NM last year where someone walked away with two bags -- right out the door. The SAs saw it happening, but for security reasons, I guess they couldn't chase after the individual directly, and had to call security. That individual was just casually shopping around, decided which bags they liked, and walked right out because they were not chained. So, it happens, and I understand. I don't find it unreasonable or strange at all, and if I really wanted a bag, I would ask an SA to unchain it for me.

There are so many smash and grabs going on I think they have to do it. I worked in a department store several years ago. The best purses they carried at the time were Coach. Well, one day 5 or 6 men literally ran in, grabbed as many purses as they could, and ran out. They did not care if they pushed people over, they were going to take those purses. They got almost all of the bags that were out on display. Clearly professionals. It was and is scary.

Don't these stores have huge Loss Prevention teams that are stationed all over the departments and around the vicinity. I go into some boutiques and I see those men all around the store, you'd think they were secret service or something.

I've never been in a NM that had guards staning around. The stand alone boutiques sometimes do, but in Texas, or at least the NM, SAKS, etc . . . stores I've been in do not.

It's one of those things where half us are fine and can tolerate it and the other half can't :shrugs:
Can't pelase all the people, all the time.

^^ no. i agree. but i was under the impression that they had alot of loss prevention walking around and such. alarms and chains on bags dont bother me. i think it just annoys me on the leather and suede coats...lol...since at that time you do have to sit and wait for someone to come with the key.

Wow, that is so scary, and... brazen! The chaining policies make more sense now.

I don't have Neimans in my area but... I just wanted to share this:

My local Nordstrom has many bags, all ranging from low end to high end, unchained, and displayed VERY closely to the entrance of the department store. Any lowlife can just literally walk into the mall and grab the nearest bag and walk out. Sure, there's one SA posted just closely there by the register, and another by the Sunglasses shop just by the entrance, but still. It's just risky that they leave these bags unchained... and so closely to the entrance.

Balenciaga's bags are just around the corner of the entrance, with Coach just a few steps away from the entrance. Now that I've thought about it, I kind of wish they would wire them up for safety reasons.

The Macy's in my Downtown mall has them wired while others lock them up behind cabinets. It all makes sense now. And here I was complaining about the inconvenience but now it makes sense to me. I think any department store selling expensive bags should have security for safety reasons.

Having things behind glass cases, locked up, etc GREATLY deters from my shopping experience. One of my most important qualities is how something feels (the material and also on my body) and if I have to ask to try on or see EVERY single thing I feel like such an inconvenience (yes, I know it's their job but still) and UGH I hate that feeling.

I am a 'touch & feel" shopper too but I have no problem with merchandise being behind counters/chained/etc. LV has their bags behind counters and on shelves, and you will usually need to ask an SA for assistance. While it may be a bother I do think this makes a lot of sense in terms of preventing theft, loss or damage to goods, particularly as it seems handbags are relatively easy to steal.
There is a local clothing and consignment store here that is quite small with a single dressing room yet a customer managed to make off with 3 Chanel bags. That's several thousand $ worth in losses that the store owner had to absorb. I can't imagine being a bigger chain having to deal with theft on a daily basis.

There are too many statements to quote here so I'll tie it all in to one answer........

Glass cases? Well, think about it this way - Lets say the bags are out so you can touch them. Great! Your an honest person who has no intention of stealing. But here comes "Betty" who has absolutely NO intention of paying for a bag and sees nothing detering her from taking it. There goes the bag. Loss to the company, higher cost for you and I in addition to the already sometimes RIDICULOUS markups.

Why don't sales associates chase after thieves? Safety. Plain and simple. If a person is brass enough to steal, then what makes anyone think they may not be brass enough to physically hurt someone that tries to stop them from their crime?

Don't the stores have LP? Of course. Think about this though......In a dept. store, you have how many depts? Womens, Men's, Jr's, Children's, accessories, intimates, home, jewerly, shoes, fragrance and some of those have multiple sub-depts. Ex. women's has collection, moderate priced appareal and sportswear in some cases. Not to mention some dept stores have multiple floors. Each dept isn't going to have only one camera on one section so you'll have multiple cams in each section and sub-section...........A large dept store has approx. 3-5 LP agents who watch anywhere from 20-50 screens (this told to me by friends I have in retail) to ensure the merchandise is purchased not stolen. Now, how are 3-5 people going to watch several different depts at once and if there is a potential thief, go out into the store to watch and possibly apprehend them? Yes, they should probably hire more LP agents but that doesn't seem to be the reality in today's economy.

For me, an inconvience yes, but I don't mind it as most SA's I've encountered are happy to assist me.
