I don't believe that there's one 'best brand'. Some last longer on different people.

I get the best wear out of China Glaze polishes - sometimes ridiculous wear of like 20 days without a single chip (as was the case with Blue Sparrow and Flying Dragon - probably because they had gritty glitter in the formulas)!

All that being said, if you have the right basecoat and the right top coat, you can really get almost any brand of nail polish to last a reasonable time (a week).

For a very diverse collection of colours, I'd have to recommend OPI.

I agree that polish wear is subjective. Some people swear by one brand, but others will say the same brand chips immediately. So far, my favorite brands are OPI, Chanel, and Zoya.
My recommendations for top and base coats are Orly In A Snap quick-dry topcoat and Ulta Silk Wrap base coat. The Orly top coat is great, because it dries super fast, but it doesn't get goopy over time. Other popular choices for top coats are Seche and Poshe. Some popular base coats are OPI Nail Envy and Orly Bonder.

By the way, since you're looking for new polishes, have you heard about Zoya's exchange? If you send in your old used polishes (minimum 6, maximum 200, any brand but Zoya), you can get an equal number of new bottles of Zoya. You only send a check or CC# to cover $3 shipping per bottle you will get. For example, I sent in in 6 old bottles of OPI that I wasn't using anymore plus a money order for $18 and I got 6 bottles of Zoya. I got Zara, Trixie, Raven, Suvi, Kotori, and Freja. The exchange offer ends 2/28, so you better hurry if you're interested. Here's a link for the details and to get started:

So far I've been having amazing long-lasting results using these.

Base Coats:

  • Seche Vite - There's a clear one & there's also a ridge-filling one (but this one goes on white)
  • Nail Tek Foundation II - It fills ridges, but doesn't go on as white as Seche's - it's more milky and barely noticeable
  • Creative Stickey - Although it looks green in the bottle, when you put it on, you can't really see any colour. It looks like it creates texture on the nail so the polish will adhere to it better.
  • OPI Natural Nail - I've only tried this when using OPI nail polish, and it has helped my manicures last 1.5 weeks when without it, I usually only get 7 days' wear.
Top Coats:

  • Seche Vite - It dries nail lacquer rock hard really fast (it's my #1 choice). It's especially great for smoothing out those gritty-glitter polishes - it'll leave it looking like glass. It will, however, get thicker over time, but there's a product called Seche Restore that makes even the goopiest work like new.
  • Sally Hansen Insta-Dry - I haven't tried the drops, just the top coat. It works pretty fast and is thinner than Seche Vite
When you find the right combination of base coat, top coat, and nail polish colour, your manicures should remain chip-free for longer. Also, it helps to also paint the free edge of your nail to extend the wear.

what would be the best base coat and top coat?^^

Zara and Kotori are simply stunning, aren't they? I've seen swatches of them, bought the bottles, and now I'm just having a hard time deciding which one to wear first!
