My professor told me Chanel bags are all made in China but assembled in Europe?

So well said! :woohoo: Having said that I am still no longer buying and the really funny part about all that - I haven't said a word to my SA but I also haven't heard from her since my last purchase in May - which was a jacket, purse, and shoes - all at one time. Hummmm......

I heard from mine today for the first time in many months with photos of things. But this was the SA whom I found was not truly for me (kind of like your experience with the VCA SA in Vegas). Despite many purchases (and some simultaneous as yours were, plus toss in some jewelry), she's usually been far less than stellar. I can't wait to move and be able to go into stores again in person! I wish the last of the boxes would pack themselves, so I could fly out and get a house! I'm actually starting to get excited (finally about something) this move. It's time to step away from the past for a while and into my future. Baby steps.

When i see people and some ladies photos in this forum with their lovely chanel mini, i thought i would buy one and that's will be my 1st chanel but after read this thread, i change my mind. I came to Furla Boutique yesterday and fall in love with their new leather mini bag. The leather is really smooth and i believe it's from calf skin and also it's made from Italy so i bought it. i'm not regret buy this bag..it's really looks elegant on me. Thanks for this thread to help me decide and open my mind for another option.
oh i'm also ask about this 'made in china' issue on furla bags, they admit it. Some furla leather bags are Made in italy and some Made in China but the quality is really great and the price still make sense.

Furla bags are very nice and I agree that the price makes sense. CHANEL prices are outrageous, however their leather classics are not made In china whatever some random professor said. They have established factories in Italy, and France - apart from everything else the volume would not be high enough to justify moving to Asia.

Orrrrrrrrrr some of us have stopped buying. :)

Tutu, it's easier to stop buying when one has already enough bags, etc. :smile1: For people that started later, they need to reach their own 'saturation point'. Many will continue buying independently of price and quality issues... This thread helped me to realize that I have reached my own 'saturation point' (at least for now). ;) I postponed indefinitely the purchase of 'my last' reissue.

It's important to continue excited about things, but sometimes it's not easy. The future will bring you many good things. I highly recommend using a good pack and unpack service, it makes a huge difference.

Agreed - one of the best books on the fashion industry I have read in the last years!

Although ironically she really stood by Chanel in that book...

On the other hand she really supported Louboutin as well and I've personally seen the quality of his shoes deteriorate in the last few years.

Is Hermes next?

Which others would you recommend?
Have you read Overdressed: The Shockingly High Cost of Cheap Fashion
by Elizabeth L Cline

To Die For: Is Fashion Wearing Out the World? by Siegle, Lucy

They have some enlightening info on the subject.

I really enjoyed Overdressed, and thanks to your recommendation I just put To Die For on my amazon wishlist :smile1:

I also liked House of Versace, although it is not about the industry per se, and Luxe Oblige. I don't know if this is available in english though.

True, but all who buy should do so with full disclosure and information about what they are buying; that's whether you are buying carpets which emit a chemical, a new car which might be recalled, or a bag. With the chemical smells, you are told what they are and how long the smell lasts, and with the car, you will get a recall notice. People should do their homework no matter the product, especially if no disclosure if forthcoming.

Yes, but hiring a packer to pack 6 sets of china & stemware gets pricey, and I really do prefer to pack my own as I'm more careful (read OCD) than most. :) I hire the movers to do the moving. It's never easy unless you have nothing or give it all away (both of which I've experienced). I just hope the future brings me peace and a lovely view. :)

I'm a newbie here and I find this topic very interesting,
I have no idea if some parts of the bag along the line of production are made in china or not, but it seems like a gamble chanel can't just take, even with price increase people will still buy the bags, just like hermes,

There was an article last year about chanel acquiring a tannery in France, their lamb skin supplier for over 30years,, of course they still relay on over a dozen other tannerys, but it seems they are trying to gain exclusivity on every single step in production line, so an exceptional chanel bag ,with embroideries or tweed, is entirely made of materials exclusively made and owned by chanel, so why go to all the this trouble and lengthy desgin and sourcing to have it made in china?

I own several chanel bags, and I never experienced any decline in quality.

You are quite right. There is absolutely NO proof whatsoever that CHANEL bags are made in china, despite the title of this thread.:D

Permit me to give an analogy. Let's say you are the largest seller of "designer" corn in the world. You buy up all of the locally stockpiled corn seed, all of the local large farms, all of the local canneries, etc. Now, can you say as a customer with 100% certainty that the corn will come from a given field or a given state or a given country? Can you guarantee the corn is not genetically modified? Will you know if the company bought up the farms to prevent them from producing corn from XYZ company or just to make it for you, or if indeed those farms will be "farmed out" for other companies? Can you say with certainty that your can of corn came from within the country that the Designer Corn seller is located in? Are you 100% sure of these responses? How can you be sure? What information will help you to make an informed decision to buy from this manufacturer? Are any towns polluted by these factories? Are the workers and farmers paid a good wage? Again, how can you know this? Should you just rely on the company and what they tell you, or should you do some investigating? What makes you sure the corn is packaged safely? Do you need a regulatory agency? How can you be sure they aren't being paid off by the designer company? Can you?

I own several chanel bags, and I never experienced any decline in quality. Stick around here and read the threads that come up eveery week about bad threads, uneven flaps, tarnishing hardware/loose hardware/broken hardware, and many other problems. I promise it will be an eye opener.

Show us the proof that they aren't...but without investigating, this is not possible. How many products today are made 100% in Europe (or the U.S.)? How many rely on parts from other countries, from workers from other countries. Chanel itself has admitted such in their letters of response. If there is doubt, check it out.
