"So far he's still flirting with the A-list zone, but not quite there yet".

The staff of Sharp magazine consider him A-list based on his pass work and I share their opinion completely. Both articles were from Sharp, an astute commenter on culture & art.

Sure but that doesn't mean people can't disagree with it.

A-list is kinda open to interpretation... and is somewhat dependant on who is talking about it.

:woohoo:

Well there are more choices at the GG, glad to see Idris Elba making the list as well, though peeved that Naomie Harris didn't make the cut (her performance was brilliant too).

Fingers crossed once again!

Did you think Idris was that good in Long Walk to freedom? I watched it and I thought he was fine but the performance didn't blow me away, I can think of a couple other performances this year that were better. Not really a big fan of Biopics though.

Yeah I thought his performance was good enough (it was very different from his other roles) but the story weak, and Naomie Harris performance was really the highlight imo... And well since Mandela's death, one could really expect that Uncle Harvey would push the hustle and Idris would get at least a major award nod or two... He might make it also to the BAFTA list eh...

Extending the GG nods subjects, peeved that Fruitvale Station was snubbed.

Sure but that doesn't mean people can't disagree with it.

Indeed it's open to interpretation. I still think overall that Fassbender isn't A-list yet, he's still very new on the scene and as much as he's hanging out with the right crowd (Brad Pitt, etc), he's still B+ at best, even if he's a the top of casting directors list lately, a project won't automatically get green lighted just because of his name on it. TYAS got the green light because A-list Brad Pitt put his money and time on it.

Fassbender is the new flavour of the moment yes, but generating Oscar buzz doesn't mean anything, lots of actors generated buzz and the hype died just as fast. Movies goers may know his name, but he isn't a movie star as of yet, he is still considered an actor i.e. praised by peers and critics for his craft (and hope it keeps going so). Movie stars are Will Smith, Tom Cruise, Robert Downey Jr to name a few. They all carry a film by themselves and the masses follow during their promo tour; when Fassbender will do the same with carrying a movie of his own, and by that it means box office success and not just charismatic on the big screen, yes A-list shall open its arms to him. Shame was an indie, it didn't draw much bo success, albeit it garnered him accolades. Lots of films have little or moderate success but performance praised. In XMFC he shares the top bill with McAvoy and other big names such as Jennifer Lawrence (the new A-list girl of the moment), 2 Oscar nominee veteran McKellen etc. The Counselor, was an all-star cast with Cruz, Diaz, Pitt, Bardem etc.

Another example would be World War Z, a mess fest to me, but because it has the name Brad Pitt on it, the crowd followed, and it was successful. They should have called it "A Zombie Movie with Brad Pitt"...

Now when Fassbender lands an Oscar nod, the ultimate prestigious recognition no matter how much I loathe its political aspect, and if he is a success at the box office on his own, studios banging at his door non stop to have him in every film, add to that he is talented etc. Then A-list!

My interest in culture and art belies in where I live; schools I attended and is informed from those experiences ; consequently I do not have any need to have them validated by anyone.
I think MF is A-list as much as I consider Christopher Plumber, Colm Feore and Donald Sutherland among the best actors. Jeffery Wright and Henry Lennix can read the phone book and I pay to see it To each its own. I have more interest in cultural integrity than commercial success. I refuse to see the world in terms of provincialism.

Michael Fassbender, 12 Years a Slave: "I'm humbled and honored to receive this nomination from the HFPA and thrilled for my friends Steve, Chiwetel and Lupita. I feel this is such an important film so thank you to the HFPA for all their support championing Solomon Northup's story."

Just out of curiosity... what do you mean by that exactly?

Hehe looks like a statement written by the TYAS team publicist since Fassbender isn't exactly good at delivering acceptance speeches (as of yet)... ;)

Well that's very honorable of you, if only the Hollywood machine was about integrity and ethic and culture etc... But it's not, that is how most A-list have been done for a while, it's all about business and profit and find a way of longevity in that industry, either with steady work or a household name to have alsmot any project green-lighted... an actor not being productive at the box office well fades into obscurity just as fast regardless of the talent.

For example Jennifer Lawrence, she may have a nice personality and other goofy but personally but her acting range is ok at best but not awesome, she isn't better than Amy Adams or even Maisie Williams (aka little Arya from Game of Thrones) she was good in Winter Bones, but it's mostly Hunger Games and Uncle Harvey getting her back during the SLP campaign and boom she made it. Remember Colin Farrell? He was supposed to be the next big thing but besides his wild antics, he bombed at the box office (from Daredevil to Alexander et other Total Recall) and though he's a good actor (especially in low bug indies, In Bruges he was pitch perfect) well...

That's how mostly an A-list is done in Hollywood, it's all about 10% talent (even though the actor is 100% talented) and 90% luck, not disagreeing with how you choose to see the world.
