I had no idea about this but when I think about it, it does make sense. There are so many romance books out there, not only in libraries but also in book stores. They wouldn't be published if there was no interest.

Schmalzy part is that female lead falls in love with male lead because she hears his love messages to his wife, all while they're lost and injured in wilderness. Major leg injury leaves you in a lot of pain and discomfort. The last thing on anyone's mind is romance. That's just too much. JMO. This comes from a person who cried while reading PS, I Love You and The Notebook. So no judging on my side. ;) :flowers:

I read that 50 Shades of Grey was uber long Twilight fanfic at first. Author changed names, places and some details in order to publish it as a proper book.

OMG - Annabel and fandora - Am totally amazed by the amount of money that is being generated by romance or female orientated literature. Its huge and growing, yet people in the film/book industries act so surprised and thenthere are articles but they never go into enough depth. It must show that women are not being served in terms of their experiences and, er, 'desires'...
Now that I know about fanfiction, I saw 'Fifty etc' which nb one novel (!) on amazon and the nytimes booklist - that is super interesting. And also now that I saw what you write about that must be really good for you Annabel...all those Atlanta people will be rushing off to see Shame because they read New-Mormonporn at the Oprah bookclubs...

I'm about to purchase 50 Shades of Grey on my IPad. Word has hit the campus and all the girls are talking about it (and all the boys are becoming curious)
Skimmed most of it - hypercrackfiction. My soul died a little at the writing, editing and in general its daytime soap opera with more boinking than Shame (to make this somewhat at MFassbender). I had to read it at same times as The Truth About Kevin (still finishing) and when you read an epistolary book about family ripping itself apart over a teen serial killer as a palate cleanser you know its gotta be special. I want to say something about the series but its hard to talk about without seeming too judgmental.

Well, they act surprised because they tend to put readers in groups. If you read comics, you must be a geek or a nerd. If you read romance novels, you must be either unhappy housewife or lonely single girl waiting for Prince Charming. Therefore not many women are willing to admit that they read romance novels regularly. One of my favorite writers (Russian BTW) said that he got into writing because he wanted his wife to read fun stuff without shame. She used to buy crime and romance novels, wrap them in paper to read them on subway. She hid the books because her circle of friends and work colleagues(university literature professors) thought such books were rubbish.

I happen to know a few people who roll eyes every time someone mentions romance novels. That's just wrong and close minded. I love Salman Rushdie but I can't read him all the time.

On the topic of romantic dramas ... On one hand, I'm a complete goner for a good love (even smutty!) story - when they hit the bullseye, they're the most swoon-worthy classics that I love to revisit again and again. On the other hand, I'm completely disinterested in fluffy romance for schmaltz' sake, who pander to their audience in a way that's almost insulting. Unfortunately the latter outdraws the former in the current output of movies, which doesn't help getting rid of the stereotype that they are superficial tearjerkers/chick flicks/what have you . I guess in the end it's all about the strength of the story, as with any genre. Do something well, and people will respond ...hopefully.

-- Edit: Fandora... great post above.

OT: Any romantic reads you'd like to share? I'd propose an old beach read I absolutely loved, though I don't know if it's categorized as a romance novel. Marian Keyes' Last Chance Saloon. Laughed, cried, swooned.

Here we go again: another new dummy so-called fan girl who forgot to get her facts straight and do some background research before spreading more BS all around.
I just can't with these people, they’re hopeless :lecture:
Comparing this creepy low life with Fassy without having any real proof to back it up must be the new trend among ignorant hipsters these days.
Ugh, dumb article is way dumber than expected

My Big Problem With Michael Fassbender:
The fact that society had seemed to forgive Brown for the fact that he really beat the crap out of Rihanna was highly upsetting to me. The fact that Brown never made a sincere apology, the fact that rumors swirl about Rihanna rekindling their romance, the fact that girls out there say they would let Chris Brown beat them...all of this is unsettling and disturbing, a strange picture of how we idolize celebrities these days. I'm not naive to think that Brown has been the only celebrity that has hit their significant other but I definitely do not think it is a race issue like some people suggest. Rather, I think that the reason why his crime is such a hot button issue is that Rihanna was famous- even more famous than Brown- and celebrity couples are dissected frequently in this world of ours. SO with all that being said- Michael Fassbender. I have talked about how much I've loved him and how sexy I find him. I have recommended Shame to dozens if not hundreds of people (who reads this site anyway?). I have always thought of him as one of the most talented actors in this generation. I thought all these things without fully knowing that he is also guilty of the same crime that I judge and hate Chris Brown for. That's right, the Michael Fassbender. The man we've all come to fantasize about is a woman beater, and this is inexcusable. Fassbender's ex-girlfriend claims that after a bender one night he threw her over a chair and broke her nose. Later, during an argument about one of her exes, he dragged her along side a car causing her to twist an ankle, blow out a knee cap and burst an ovarian cyst. I haven't found any articles or videos where Fassbender has disputed or apologized for these actions, but this makes no matter. A man should never EVER hit a woman. For that matter (and one that not a lot of people talk about) no one should ever hit anybody. For Christ's sake this isn't the middle ages. Aren't we supposed to solve our problems like adults? I mean, if you're really that angry, take to the internet. That's what everyone else does. Is Fassbender an amazing actor? Yes. Absolutely. Chris Brown is an amazing dancer. These things are irrelevant. In today's world where personality and celebrity are so intertwined we can't just ignore their transgressions, no matter how talented they are. Clearly, these men will continue to work, and they should. But I also don't think I will ever seek out a Michael Fassbender film because of his talent/ attractiveness anymore. I will no longer say "I love Michael Fassbender" even if I think he's a good actor. When men commit crimes like this they should be branded with a scarlett letter. I promise you, dear Ologists, that I will no longer refer to Fassbender the way I have in the past. I will post trailers, occasional casting news, stills, etc. But if you want me to remain a fan girl to Fassbender, you are out of luck. For me, this isn't even half the shame that Michael Fassbender deserves.

Here's some reading she could use too: http://goliath.ecnext.com/coms2/gi_0199-12458593/Exposed-the-sordid-past-of.html

 Why would she lie about something like that? Well let me think, here’s some no-brainer ideas…

just saw this on the imdb board:

It sounds like it's a romance novel.

Honestly, people dump on romance but it's the genre that keeps the publishing industry alive. Have you all heard about the 50 Shades of Grey thing? Next Twilight and all that, only the couple in the books is into BDSM. It's in movie talks. Would love to see fassy in that. :graucho:

Unfortunately (or fortunately for myself as a romance author) "schmaltzy" appeals to the masses.

I don't doubt that for one second. I'm a sucker for chick lit myself, but most of the time I dislike the film versions of the book. Somehow it becomes less believable and more corny as soon as I see it on the big screen.

This happened, still think he's cute?:p

He's not too bad for his age. Some of those 80s stars look like extras from The Walking Dead now. Proper scary shizz.

What do you think are your biggest acting accomplishments?
The first thing I did in the US was HBO show In Treatment – it was one of the most fulfilling jobs I've ever had. Now, I feel that Jane Eyre is a big accomplishment for me. Jane is a great character and so many people love and connect to her story. At its core, it's still very modern: it's about a young girl trying to find a connection in a very dislocated world, and about finding love and a family. The themes have a universality and, for that reason, people can always relate to them.

It seems like you really inhabit your characters. Would you agree?

My favourite actors are the ones who make you forget who they are in real life. I like disappearing into someone else's skin. It helps me to embody them.

Did wearing those corsets help you get into character?
I hated wearing them – they're so uncomfortable. But getting into full costume really helped me to understand the physical repression that women experienced at that time. The clothing they had to wear went hand in hand with the mental and emotional repression they also felt – this was a huge part of Victorian culture. Once the corset was on, I couldn't really take in a whole breath, I couldn't eat very much and I couldn't move as freely due to the discomfort it caused. It was painful.

What's the secret to your chemistry with Michael Fassbender?
He has a really fantastic energy and is very worldly and so friendly. I feel like we got on very well from the beginning. We have a similar way of working and we were able to counter the intensity of the material by being goofy in between shoots. We channelled all the positive energy that we had into the material.

What kind of pressure have you felt working so hard from a young age?
There are two very different ways of learning – being in school and being here doing this. Both have pros and cons. Although I know and enjoy this practical way of learning best, the difficult thing is that I feel like the mistakes I make or the things I do which aren't perfect leave a real mark, which doesn't always happen in school. But having people remind you how lucky you are really helps.

Well, this is something. After learning about the Prometheus Q & A with Ridley Scott after WonderCon (at the AMC theaters in Anaheim) I wanted to know how one could get tix to the event. So I found out that you had to be an AMC Stubs member, which sucks because I swore I'd never pay for a movie rewards program. But the manager of the theater told me that the only people who were getting invites were Stubs members in the Los Angeles area. So I figured I'd take a chance and get a membership. Though, I figured I was too late.

Lo and behold, I just got an email invite to the event! But I had to RSVP through a third party site for which I had to set up a login, etc. and that took a bit. So by the time I was able to RSVP, all of the passes had run out. It's okay, though. I'm not worried about it. I'll get in. ;)

You seriously need to get in. Just pretend you're with a film or photography crew. Always works, unless you need a badge then it's a different matter. ;)
Good luck!

Has any of you read the Anita Blake books? They were recommended to me by someone on the Askars thread years ago. I read about 13 books, before I got seriously nauseous by the porn/BDSM content. Now, I love bonk busters but these books are ridic. The protagonist is basically getting laid non-stop to feed the 'ardeur'. She used to be kick-*** in the first couple of books, but now she's turned into the polar opposite. Real shame.

ITA Artica - most the time, some film versions of books are never the same when they adapt them for the movies...(although the classics, sense & sensibility, jane eyre, emma they get right)....I love the book PS I love you, ...but the movie was utter s**t (my opinion). I just hope that if Michael is do The Mountain Between Us, I hope it is a solid script and not just a fluffy movie
