Lainey is snarky, bitc*y, judgy, obviously favors some while blasts others but she's right about certain things - money and handling of events.
TIFF appearance should have been handled better by Michael's or studio's team. But I honestly doubt some journalist or film critic will have their panties in the twist because Michael was no-show at the premiere. Seriously, like Keira and Viggo are some C and D list stars and ADM needed Michael to sell well.
Let's not forget that Shame and The Descendants share the same studio and I'm guessing executives decided it would be more efficient to put all money on one horse aka The Descendants. From exec's POV, it's better to push Clooney because he's better known, has loads of HW connections, movie he is in is the type of movie Academy members love. Fox Searchlight is still pushing Michael but maybe not to that extent as Clooney because screenings of Shame went bad. To be exact - people hated it.
To get Oscar nom, an actor/actress has to work the circuit - press, critics and Academy members. Unless it's a really bad year and one has exceptional performance hence obvious lock from the start. Those who claim that they won't or don't do it, well they're lying. Look at Natalie Portman last year - she did every single thing to get that Oscar - pretty much like Clooney and Pitt this year.
