I'd be pissed if I was given that ring... but hey, to each their own.

LOL me too. I prefer the good old fashioned diamond. My mom has an emerald as her stone in her ring and she loves it so i guess everyone has different tastes. I think the ruby is really pretty actually but it just looks small. It would be so beautiful if it was bigger and had little diamonds around the edges. Like this:

a) to each his own
b) depending on the quality and type of ruby that is, the ring could be worth upwards of $100k
c) [this is an assumption] shes Chinese so perhaps the color of the stone has significance?

I think it's a beautiful ring and suits her perfectly. Neither one of them are gaudy or flashy, but they do have real substance and their love and life is way more important that a large stone in a ring. They remind me a bit of the Gates and that is a good thing as far as I am concerned.

eta high quality rubies and emeralds are many times more valuable than diamonds and much more rare

The Gates' like to pretend they're down to earth but it seems nobody knows the Gates' live in one of the most expensive homes in the world. Their home is valued at nearly $200,000,000! That's beyond excess.

I don't think Zuckeberg's wife should be sporting a huge $2M Kardashian diamond. That would look absolutely ridiculous on her. She's not a glamazon and could never pull it off. It would also be gross and insane to wear while working in a hospital.

The point is... that ruby ring is simply ugly and looks like something she fished out of a toy claw machine at Dave & Busters. But then again, she is clearly not into style or fashion, so that's fine.

Regardless of their home, Melinda Gates is always dressed in a simple way and never looks gaudy or over the top and the same goes for him. Another point is, just because you are a billionnaire does not equate to love of jewelry or fashion. She will likely get blasted on TPF for not dressing a certain way and she probably could care less, which I find refreshing.

The style of her ruby is very simple and traditional which some people really like and the stone is well regarded, evidently in the Chinese culture.

It always amuses me when people assume that it takes someone to be "smart" to go to medical school. Actually, most of the time, it just takes a lot of hard work and sacrifice. As we say in med school, it takes 80% perseverance and 20% intelligence.

I'm not in medical school, but I work in research, so I work with a lot of people who are applying/transiting to medical school. I could not agree with your statement more. :D

I'm not saying Priscilla Chan is not smart! I'm just agreeing with the statement that you don't have to be smart to get into medical school.

I work at UCSF and many (not all) doctors (interns, residents, fellows) do not necessarily equate to intelligence, or even common sense at some instances.

Off topic:
Definitely agree with both of you. Just to clarify, I'm not out to diminish Priscilla's academic and career achievements since UCSF is a superb med school. Rather, I want to point out that frequently in medical school, perseverance triumphs smartness. However, many physicians believe the contrary so their behavior reflect this, often discrediting other health care professionals' opinions.

Also, if one isn't "smart' enough to get into med school, one just need to have enough money to spend on prep courses, study aids, private lessons for extracurricular activities to stand out when application season arrives (*insert tiny bit of sarcasm here*). In the end, it will cost several thousands of dollars just for the application process.

Medical school is like a marathon. It is all about endurance.

Back to Priscilla's ring:
There probably is some cultural significance to a ruby ring, but a (flashy) diamond ring is universally held as the "standard". Plus, money is money, wherever you go.
But perhaps the ruby symbolizes wisdom or is a family tradition. Who knows. As long as Priscilla is content with it, then that's all it matters.

LOL. If my cousin who flunked 4th grade can get into and get through medical school, anyone can. I agree, you don't have to be very intelligent, it simply takes a lot of sacrifices and you need to learn how to cram/memorize lots of information.

Priscilla could be brilliant, but being a doctor doesn't automatically equate to being einstein.
