I do agree to some extent that we tPFers tend to look a lot more closely at our bags and notice flaws that many average consumers may not notice. There are also many people here who arguably wrongly categorise minor misalignments etc as flaws. I don't think the average person on the street would notice a tiny misalignment on either side of a seam on a bag, but obviously anyone would notice cracks in the leather of a brand new bag and quite rightly deem it a defect.
Having said all that, there is absolutely no question that the quality has gone down over the years. That's just a fact. And it's not just LV, either. Most luxury brands (as well as high street brands, car manufacturers, manufacturers of electronics - mostly all companies) are cutting corners to save money. I guess it's just a sign of the times. They know people will continue to buy regardless, and if everyone else is doing it - why not?
I've just recently purchased an LV bag that will be fifteen years old this year and the quality is just astounding. The canvas feels thicker, the leather is beautifully aged, everything is still in such great condition, the stitching has held up perfectly, the hardware hasn't faded even slightly and feels sturdy and of great quality. I believe LV still makes products of a very good quality, and their craftsmanship is still head and shoulders above that of many other brands, but I also know the pieces they sell now, in general, are not of the same quality as the bag I just bought from 1998. I'll be interested to see how my current bags look in 10-15 years time!
