I caught myself letting out a small sigh of relief when I first realized he was going to play a major role and be right behind his King. He has the most unobtrusive way of taking care of things. During the initial entry and seating of King Charles, for example, the end of the train on the cape needed a slight adjustment and with sleight of hand it was done. No one better could have had the back of those young pages.

I bet it gave Charles comfort and calm that his trusted equerry was the gentleman assisting him with his robe change during the ceremony in full view of everyone.

Wonder what Honor the King will bestow when Johnny’s service ends?
I can think of a few... He could replace Harold for one!

Sadly, his 3 year stint as KC’s equerry will be over some time this year. I don’t know how many equerries Charles has had in the almost 50 years he served as Prince of Wales but talk about timing. In his 3 year stint Lt. Col. Johnny was a witness to and key participant in 2 major once in a lifetime events in the country’s history, the funeral of the longest reigning monarch, QE II, and the coronation of KC III, the first coronation in 70 years which also happens to be the first of the 21st century.

Well said. He will certainly be missed.

I wonder if the King has the authority to extend the 3 years?
I believe the position of Equerry to the King or Queen is intended to give the Equerries the exposure and seasoning needed to give a good boost to their careers and many of them have gone on to senior posts in the military. That’s why the position of Equerry is only a 3 year rotation for promising mid level officers from all branches of the military and not the final position to reward a military officer nearing the end of his career.

And don’t forget the Platinum Jubilee, which I think we may never see in our lifetimes again, since that was when many of us (including me) were introduced to this paragon of masculine pulchritude.

I was sure they’d keep Lt Col Jonny on duty until after the coronation, since they wouldn’t want someone new popping up in time for an incredibly complex and highly choreographed event who didn’t know the King already? And maybe the pandemic also extended the time he’s serving a bit since Charles didn’t have a lot of engagements when rbe UK was locked down.

Given his rank, and maybe what he wants to do, my speculation is that he might be given another battalion of the Royal Regiment of Scotland to command? (The 5th Battalion is very small, just one company, so it’s commanded by a Major, but the other bigger battalions have Lt. Colonels as commanders.) I’m sure he’d be consulted about next placements - how could they not reward such exemplary service in difficult times?

I'm hoping he gets a foreign office posting, certainly he has the education and experience for it. Say, defence attache or even ambassador to a small country. He has a very bright bright future.

Anyway, any sighting of our Hothunk at the coronation concert?

Did you know he had a brand new post at the coronation? He was appointed Groom of the Robes...

The post was in abeyance after 1954, although an Equerry was usually designated 'Acting Groom of the Robes' on occasions (such as the State Opening of Parliament) when robes are worn. It returned to active use for the Coronation of Charles III in 2023 when Lieutenant Colonel Jonathan Thompson was appointed.

All this talk about Groom of the Robes and disrobing is making my thoughts wonder... is it hot in here?:sweatdrop::blush:

That was a very important thing for him to do. Back in the days of the Tudors and later Kings, only noble men of rank did such things for the King. He will definitely end up with a title one of these days.

ETA: Groom of the Robes! Makes perfect sense.
