^true. i read that when she took the helm, celine closed down factories in china and several stores that used to sell the brand - including boutiques and online, for reasons of exclusivity. these, among others, are part of the makeover.

I don't like the idea of my favorite luxury brands branching into China, India, Egypt, etc. It's sort of like buying Champagne, and finding that the maker outsourced the production of the grapes to New Jersey, or buying Vidalia onions that were grown in Mexico. It used to be that a company name stood for something, and that when you bought that brand, you were always sure of what you were getting. Now, greed and globalization have put an end to that - the corporate motto is "We make our money by screwing the consumer!"

So let me ask my fellow TPFers -

What constitutes buying a $3k bag vs. a $400 bag, both made in China? Before we paid for the hand of the artisan in Italy. Believing the bag was made by hand. If we are no longer paying for that, then what are we paying for really? A manufacturer's name??? Supporting his lifestyle? Makes me think twice about supporting my own!! Perhaps if I keep more $$ in my pocket, I can choose to spend more wisely! ;)

I think that if we are paying artisan prices for bags made in China, then we are paying for a brand name ONLY. I admit that I am a snob and will only buy if a bag is made in France or Italy. If I am paying those prices it better be hand made.

Interesting. I buy mainly medium range stuff and so I suspect virtually all the bags I have are made in China. I definitely think that for many bags you are paying in part for quality but also for image. When design houses build their identity about being so FRENCH or ITALIAN and then move their production to China I think it makes customers feel differently than when it's a less expensive line that was always made overseas. You lose a lot of the romance about a handcrafted bag made in the label's native country. I think if a Chinese high fashion house were to make their goods in country it wouldn't have the same affect on people's perceptions for that same reason.

I was thinking a Prada or Loewe handbag would be nice in my wardrobe ... I shall reconsider my purchase ...

And someone knows about Dior purse production ?
I want a real perfect gift 100 % french made for Xmas :xtree:

yeah, this is a sad truth!
a lot of Big brands are moving to Asia to manufacture there for "overhead cost" reason. if you want a bag made by a real talent, Hermes is still there.
My Asian colleague brought me LV from China, of course it's a copy, they call it "A class or class A?", dang, it's almost the same :-(.

I remember learning this a while back. I thought about it again after reading the 3,526,734th rant about TPF's favorite whipping boy (well, other than Coach), Louis Vuitton: the quality is inferior, they're everywhere, they hate logos, and then the poster specifically mentioned their preference for Loewe and Celine (which of course shows their superior taste, discernment, and insistence on quality). I didn't say a word, but I laughed. :D

If you think bags made in Italy or Spain are made by hand and /or made better than those made in China the advertising ploy the manufacturers are using is working.:yahoo:

The country of orgin says nothing about who is making the bag or the quality.

^^I'm in total agreement with you! My only gripe is the manufacturers should not get away with the astronomical pricing! A century ago, when things were manufacturered by hand, patrons were expected to pay more for the service. I think it is deplorable to have to pay 3K for a designer bag that says made in Italy when in fact 3/4's of it was made in China or now other countries for a minuscle amount of money. An MBMJ bag is rated very high in quality and the manufacturer labels the bag "made in China" and it only costs $400 - $600. I preface "only" because gone are handbags costing $150.00.

The irony of all this is, handbag sales have escalated more significantly than ever, so apparently the manufacturers have accomplished their goal!

I have known that Celine and Loewe are made in China but only the cloth bag not the leather one, Right?

That's why Celine and Loewe are out of my eyes.

Why I have to pay those extra $$$$$$$$$$ for a bag that pay a tiny $$ for their production.

Anyway, most of products now are made in China including ipod and sony laptop. That's why everytime I bought the stuffs I always see MADE IN ..... first.

I agree that it's important to check out where the bags are made in, but any company can produce most of the major components in China and still say made in Italy or France. For example, it could be possible that the gold chains and zippers are made in Europe, but the fabric (canvas, leather, inner lining) is made in China and everything is assembled in China.

So ultimately, what are we paying for??? Also how can you tell HOW a bag is made? Made in XXX doesn't cut it anymore.

Thoughts?

What about Hermes? I know they use superior material...but is everything made in Europe? Do they source any parts of production in Asia?

Also what does everyone think if companies said "Designed in Italy, Made 100% in Italy" -- would people pay more for this compared to "Designed in Italy, Material Made in Italy, Assembled in China"???

Would people pay more for a pure Italian bag? (say...several hundred more)

My answer to your question above is "Yes. I am willing to pay several hundred more if I am guaranteed I am purchasing a handbag that was made by hand in Italy." I resent being fooled and paying the same price for a handbag that wasn't! Everyone is screaming about quality control these days on premier and designer handbags. This shouldn't be when one is spending hundreds of dollars! The only way the insanity will stop is when the consumer finally catches on and realizes it is a marketing strategy to make them think that the bag is made in Italy or France. This great psychology makes the handbag manufacturers almost as rich as the jewelery industry now!!

Of course, even if a bag is made in Italy, it doesn't mean it was, necessarily, made by a fairly-paid artisan (or an artisan, at all), these days.
