Hi Jane, Birkins are never really hard to get in Paris - they get about 20 - 40 birkins a day running up to Christmas last year mainly because of Christmas and also people trying to beat the price increase.
Paris also takes orders all the time now largely due to a fall in orders coming from the US.
The hardest place to get a Birkin now is the UK... because it is the cheapest in the world - thanks to the falling sterling. Even the French are trying to buy their Birkins in the UK, but I understand that the SA's are told not to take orders for Birkins from people who do not reside in the UK.
