Kelly 25 or 28

Hi TPF’ers,

I’m also deciding between a K25 and a K28. Read all your comments and glad this thread is back to life!

Hoping you can help me with regard to weight. I have a K28 that I usually use for travelling. Just got back from Europe and found it heavy (have a retourne). I usually put a small wallet, make up pouch (tissue, lipstick, balm, sanitizer), phone and passport. Sometimes 2 phones.

Is there a noticeable weight difference between a K25 and a K28 retourne? TIA!
I tend to carry my K20 or K25s Epsom (light and water resistant) for travelling in cities. I would be able to fit what you described in a 25. I carry 1 Calvi (cards) 1 Enveloppe (cities which need cash), tissues, wet wipes, mini umbrella, lipstick, passport, 2 phones, foldable shopper bag. I think next lightest bag for me personally is Swift K28 Retourne.

I usually travel with a 28. The things I can't fit in a 25 like a wrap/shawl, a water bottle, a mini umbrella, a Kindle - I can get a couple of these in a 28 along with the other usuals.
My calculation is generally that a 25 can take me out for the day if I don't need to be prepared for changing weather (the aforementioned wraps, umbrellas, etc.) or carry any serious supplies. But a 28 is much better and I rarely feel I need more room.
(All of this based on retourne; sellier 25 is a bit tougher IMO.)
Good to know this… I don’t usually carry a water bottle or an umbrella but a shawl would be something useful (for me). I do use a long passport holder to hold paper tickets (very old school, isn’t it!) and the size makes me wonder if the length will fit.

I did watch the videos as well and it seems the 25 fits a lot! But I agree with you on the roominess of the 28- and I like that it has 2 pockets. It’s just a bit heavy. Still on the fence!

Thanks for sharing :)

Oh this is perfect! I’m now leaning towards a k25! That’s about what I carry as well. I was thinking of a sellier but heard it’s difficult to open? How do you find it?

Also wanted to ask you about the weight difference in thr K28 and K25 retourne. Is it really that noticeable?

Thanks again!! :)

Well yes Epsom is a bit stiff but I prefer that structured look, in Sellier. It's also harder to pickpocket I hope. Honestly the weight difference also depends on the leather and on that particular batch. I still think my eg Retourne Togo 25 is noticeably lighter than my 28 even in Swift.

I can’t imagine Togo being lighter than swift! It’s a good thing to take into consideration.

Least important question ever and apologies for hijacking this thread, but do you use a specific water bottle in your K28? I am always looking for a nice lightweight reusable bottle, that will stand tall in my B30 without peeking out over the top, because I have so much anxiety about a bottle that is lying flat leaking and causing an internal flood

I've been using this one - it's pretty small, but working for me so far.

Seems like a fair q to me! Hydration is important! I don’t have a specific bottle - just whichever fits! I have too many water bottles of all sizes because I hike and do a lot of backcountry travel. I lie the bottle down inside the bag liner (I don’t know how I’d keep it standing up anyway), but always check the seal first! (That said I don’t think I’ve ever carried water in my Box Kellys! Too nervous.)

Thanks! You're right, an insert/liner probably offers some protection and is a good compromise.

I know I should just deal with it but spills from a (leak-proof...) branded water bottle once completely ruined the lining of a limited edition LV so I'm just overly cautious now. And H can fix bag exteriors but not interiors!
