and this. intimidated by a stranger in a magazine? that's bananas.
I think you missed the point, it's not about being intimidated by a stranger in a magazine, it's about the woman that men go crazy over. Kate is just one example of that and she happens to be in magazines, but it can be a girl from your work, or a girl that lives next door.

There was a girl in my social circle who most guys considered really hot and guess what the women in this circle endlessly did? Criticize the s*it out of her appearance and obsess over her chin. They would actually say "but what do they see in her, she has such a strong chin." Women can be strange sometimes.

I agree with what you said earlier. IMO, the 'intimidation' thing is more of a subconscious thing, it's not jealousy or anything. We are primal beings after all and deep down there is always that competition for the opposite sexes approval somewhere. So naturally, when a women is considered hot by a lot of men, we might be more critical, whether we realize it or not. Using the words intimidation or jealousy will of course get people all defensive, those aren't the right words to describe it because it isn't either. I think we've all been in a situation where a bunch of guy friends are fawning over a girl and you think to yourself "what's so special about her?" and then you find yourself(subconsciously probably) telling yourself that you have better hair or boobs, or something:laugh: . We've all been there. Of course that doesn't apply to any woman that finds another woman unattractive. People are allowed to have innocent preferences that don't have some underlying meaning. Criticizing another woman doesn't automatically mean you must have these feelings deep down. Maybe you just genuinely don't find them attractive. It doesn't always have to be about competition. But yes, you do have a point and there is truth to what you are saying.

Agree, and good on you for recognizing it and being honest enough to admit it.

And of course what I said earlier doesn't apply to every single woman on this thread, or anywhere else, who doesn't find Kate attractive. That's why I said "some" women, but some people just don't see that and still get really defensive.

A few years back, there was a study that has been done to show how men's and women's brain is different. They put guys in the same room and a hot women walks in, they spent 5 seconds looking at the other guys and 5 minutes looking at her. Whereas, when they put women together in a room and hot guy was there, they spent 5 seconds looking at him and the rest of the time looking at each other to see the competition and who was prettier.

So true.

Where I live, I've met quite a few men that didn't find Angelina Jolie attractive... They all said she looks either unnatural or alien-ish. What men define as beautiful is probably a cultural thing...

That surprised me because I know a lot of men who found Angelina hot in her Lara Croft days, but now think she looks ill. To each their own!

A lot of this is nurture not nature. It would be interesting to see this replicated in both patriarchal and more equal societies.

No I got your point. I don't agree w/it at all. I can admit when a woman is beautiful bc it's no sweat off my back. I like looking at pretty people in general or really pulled together looking women. /shrugs/ I'm not in the habit of doing this...maybe it's bc I'm not super young and don't feel like I'm in competition w/anyone.

But me thinking she's not attractive has nothing to do w/your intimidation theory since the men in my life aren't checking for her. Saying "I don't get why someone is considered pretty" is different from intimidation bc often men and women find different things attractive. Sometimes my dh will tell me someone is attractive and I go "Really?" but that's different from your intimidation theory.

But Kate Upton is very "American" attractive so I don't get why people are surprised she's working. She fits societies standards quite well. Beauty is subjective after all---many women in this thread list other top models they find attractive. You say women are berating her bc men find her attractive but that isn't a factor in my opinion.

I think men found Angelina attractive back in her Lara Croft days but I don't know any man who would consider her hot now. I don't think men are generally into the super skinny look. But even back then, she would have been different to someone like Kate Upton. Back in the Lara Croft days, she was so stunning that most men would probably find her intimidating. She came across as someone who eats men for breakfast, whereas Kate has more of a girl next door approachable look, she looks like someone they would actually stand a chance with, if she wasn't famous.
