I received my Diane Messenger this week! My uneducated American brain is so impressed by both the quality and design of this bag. I’ve attached a few photos for reference - this is the heritage leather in ardoise with gold hardware. I can honestly say I’ve never felt a leather nearly as luxurious as this - and the smell is just insane! I haven’t had a chance to properly use her yet, but just today I’ve removed the protective stickers and filled her up!

I will admit I was a bit nervous about making such an expensive purchase from a brand that I’ve never seen in person! I spent the last year learning everything I could about JD (thank you everyone for your helpful and insightful posts on this thread ) and now that I finally did it, I have zero regrets. It’s not just another handbag - it’s the perfect marriage of style, functionality, and precise craftsmanship, and that iconic hardware is just *chef’s kiss.* It adds the perfect touch of sophistication that will elevate any look. The SAs went above and beyond in their customer service and truly made this feel like a luxurious experience despite being virtual. This was the first time I’ve felt that giddy excitement over a purchase in a very long time! ❤️

So so gorgeous! Definitely comes across more brown than I was expecting, and I love it! I think you had previously posted that you knew yours was coming in a week - how long prior had you purchased? I need to reach out to JD to confirm when I can expect to get my messenger (put in the order before the new year, but I think the website said something about a 3-6 month delivery timeframe).

I'm assuming that if you have a reasonably compact wallet or a few calvi/bastia type SLGs they would fit just fine, and that the back slip pocket won't fit a phone without stretching it a phone would have to be hand-held or be substituted for the battery pack.
Will you wear this as a crossbody or on your shoulder, and what do you think about that wide, flat strap; do you think it will be comfortable over a day's wearing? I didn't make it to the boutique on my recent trip so I'm still assessing and looking for info!

I’m going to wear it crossbody and I think the strap is not much wider than my Prada strap, so I think it will be fine.

I’m interested in getting a Passementerie strap but I think that will be for much much later.

This thread is a paid promotion regardless of who created it and why, TPF is very transparent about this fact. How is this even debatable? And why is marketing strategy a "nefarious plot"?

This is exactly what I am looking forward actually. Maybe someone who bought the bag can explain what qualities make a machine sewn Diane from a startup brand 3 times as expensive as a machine sewn Celine 16 mini from a reputable heritage lux brand?
If someone has both bags, a comparison in pictures would be perfect. Because I honestly don´t know why.

Could it be the hardware and the leather? I don’t know if Celine’s bags come in barenia type leather or if you can place a special order like with JD? JD’s hardware seems more elaborate too. Are Celine’s bags lined in leather? I don’t own one so I’m not sure.

Thank you! This color wasn’t initially in my top choices but the SA suggested it and I’m glad she did! It’s a very versatile color. I placed my order on January 30 and it was shipped to me on January 31. I received the bag about 6-7 days later. Fortunately, this bag was currently available in the Paris boutique so I didn’t have to pre-order. I was quoted the same timeframe for preorders as you mentioned above. I hope yours arrives soon!!

I’m not an expert on Celine, but the closest option I see to the Diane is the 16 Small in Natural Calfskin. That bag is priced at $4950 USD - not that much less expensive than the Diane 20 in Heritage leather priced at approx $5700 USD. The $750 price difference could easily be due the factors mentioned above like the difference in leather and hardware quality, and the scale of production. In my personal opinion, I think these bags are actually quite comparably priced.

Yes, these things are not exclusive to Joseph Duclos.
Celine 16 does come in Novonappa type leather too and is leather lined.
Also there is a broad selection of colors, although to be frank, almost all with GHW which I hate. You can indeed place VERY special orders via "Haute Maroquinerie" program. These bags are hand stitched, available in Niloticus croc and their bespoke-ness goes as far as replacing plated hardware with real 18k gold HW (with or without diamonds or other stones), something JD is very unlikely to offer.

I haven't used my bag a ton but the hardware is still shiny and scratch-free. The seams of the panels protrude so the metal doesn't get direct contact when setting it down.

Also I LOVE the gusset hardware. I’ll be most curious about the long-term durability on that element as I’ve never seen it on a bag before.

There is a similar thing that Hermès did many decades ago which is the Passe-Guide:



But yeah, I think the Diane is a much nicer, modern improvement on that:



I especially like it with palladium hardware because it's like a mirror brace

The difference is that in H it´s functional (connecting with the strap and distributing weight).
In JD it´s just there to look pretty. Bags like this hold their shape perfectly without any metal staples.

Oh wow, I had no idea! Looks like Hermes re-released for a limited run in 2012 and the bags sold for $11,700. Interesting!

I think it would be neat if JD comes out with any future bag designs that incorporate a metal gusset band.

That and either keeping the Diana latch style or coming up with another sleek design!
