I just wanna say I'm happy for Joseph Duclos. I got an email that the Saint Clair messenger bag in camel was available (I signed up for a notification). But since I'm saving up for something else (going to Paris in a month), I passed on it, despite seeing it available to purchase on their website. Three days later I checked it out again on their website, and it's sold out.

Looks like they are doing well <3

I went to the Joseph Duclos store in Paris last Sunday. Nice, well-lit store, and knowledgeable manager. She took me downstairs to the area where craftsmen demos their bag-making skills (no craftsmen unfortunately, since it was a Sunday). I learned that their leather is not really barenia, in that it doesn't come from Tanneries Haas, but a small tannery in Alsace that exclusively supplies leather to Duclos. But it does feel like barenia and it smells good, as vegetable tanned leathers always do.

She gave me perfume samples and a bag catalog, which was sweet because I didn't even buy anything. (I just bought jewelry)

The Saint-Clair messenger bag is so cute in person. It looks more like a cube on a sling than a typical messenger bag. It body is so stiff, like wood. Apparently the leather is put on a mold and then subjected to heat. And they use saddle stitch but unlike the usual way where the leather is glued parallel to each other and then stitched, for the messenger bag they glue the leather perpendicular and then stitch, like this:

And then they line the inside of the bag so the stitching doesn't show. Impressive craftsmanship.

I also noticed on the website that they had a price increase. The messenger bag was 3900 eur before, and now it's 4063 eur.

Hello all, sorry this might be a tad bit long. I decided to go "purse shopping" today and after about an hour of looking was not happy with the quality and the prices of bags. I looked at bags at LV, YSL, Gucci, and a few others and they were all $3K and the quality felt like mass produced bags. I am happy to spend on a bag, but this all felt so cheap for the price. So I am officially unable to purchase anything other than H and JD (and maybe Moynat) at this time in my life. That all said, I am thinking of getting the Diane bag as my next piece. I will be in Paris later this year, but would like to get the bag sooner so wondering about the size for me. Does anyone have one and if so how do you feel about the small vs. larger bag. I am 5'3" and really worry about bags "wearing me". My B30 was the perfect size for my needs and worked well for a bit, but it just needed a shoulder strap... I usually carry my H-C wallet, car keys, makeup, ear buds and my phone(s). Any advice or comments greatly welcome and pictures would be fantastic too. Thank you!!!

@bagnut1 ‘s post #42 might be of help. I’m 5’2, and am leaning against getting a JD Diane bc the style is a bit buttoned up and perhaps too sartorial tailored and UES NY for me. While I grew up on the UES of NY, that’s not how I dress. The JD bag reminds me of someone I once knew who was gorgeous, blonde, and tall, and wore a lot of domenico vacca, which is not my style at all. And, yes, the idea that the bag might wear me also played into my decision. The hw, which reminds me a bit of cesare paccioti, has a lot to do with it too. Last year I commissioned a hand stitched Buffalo Dalmatian bag from an independent artisan Duret in part bc it has no visible HW. But that’s a very personal thing, and it’s possible that you would need to try the Diane on to figure out style and size. JMO

The Diane top handle is similar to H Sellier Kelly and Moynat Gabrielle in construction - it's quite stiff and perhaps looks bigger than a similarly dimensioned bag in the retourne style.

I'm around the same height as you and @880 (and agree with her astute UES assessment). I have also (just) recently started caring about the "wearing me" aspect. I personally would be fine with either size - depends on how you will use the bag. I went with the messenger version because it's more appropriate for my current needs (and less UES vibe).

And +1 on recommending that you think about custom options if you are dissatisfied with the quality/price/function landscape right now. Good luck and let us know what you decide!

Love my Coquilecot Diana. IMO way more special than navy and much easier to pair with anything that isn’t blue. But whatever works best for you and your wardrobe is the way to go.

Thank you for replying @bagnut1. I appreciate it very much. <3 Could you please explain what you meant by "way more special than navy"? Is it very orangey in sunlight? My wardrobe is literally all navy blue and black so I will listen to you if you say that you found it easier to pair with anything. I will visit the store next week but I would love to hear your experience before I go in (coz I will automatically choose navy). <3

This is NOT my picture. It is on Emmanuelle Voisin's IG. Compared to Coquelicot Diana, does not the Coquelicot Lectoure look kinda orangey, @bagnut1, what do you think? Is it just the lighting? I wish somebody was going with me to the store.

That Diana is the same as mine. Yes in this photo the tote does look more orange-y, but it’s generally true that the same color name (which I believe typically refers to a tannery formula) will look slightly different in different leathers.

Try this - put your finger over the body of the tote in the pic and imagine it in navy - it would totally disappear into her outfit.

And, take selfies in the store to help you decide - it really gives more info than the mirror. Good luck! (And I am sure you will love whatever you decide on.)

Thank you so much @bagnut1 for your precious advice. You are like the mum I never had. ❤

I think the bags are beautiful and of course I love the history, but the hardware on the Diane bag does slightly remind me of this...

Not necessarily a bad thing! Just one of the first things I thought of.
