To clarify I actually did have an issue with my bag which I reported to them many months later. It was resolved quickly and without agita.

This is another reason I’m not convinced that YGR’s (legitimate) complaint is or should be a general litmus test for their client service performance.
I'm not sure that many are thinking that it is but for those who have had "legitimate" issues
JD did not resolve them in the manner they expected or the way yours was handled.
In particular, this issue has escalated way beyond what many would expect from Duclos
We are not discussing the design or the beauty of the bag, but a sales tax issue that has impacted @YGR
There is no price for good will & client service performance for many is a big component in
making a decision especially when it pertains to an international transaction.

Hello all

I, like many of you, also have had a great customer experience with JD. I bought Diane in July 2023. Then I purchased a mini Saint Claire in February 2024, but that bag had a closure issue (it was broken) and i had to return it. All of that was handled very well by JD.

In March 24 i got a 1st letter from the State (addressed to me) and I immediately emailed a copy of the letter to JD. I was very surprised why State is stating that my Sales taxes might be outstanding, etc... JD assured me that I don't have to worry, that all is paid off, and I don't owe any taxes back to the State. I took their words for it.

In July 24 State reached out to me asking via email asking if i know how JD is registered with the State, or their seller permit #. I immediately reached out to JD with State being cc and ask for that info. I also called State asking why they are reaching out to me and not JD and was told that State reached out to JD various time but was ignored. So at that time, i became a middle man trying to get info requested from JD so State can close this case. It was all done via email communication between all parties involved. Info requested was not provided by JD. The only answer we got from JD was something like this: 'XXX (state rep name), I already told you, DHL pays our taxes' .... at that point i was not asking for a refund, i was just trying to get info needed to clear my name with the State.

Beg of August 24, I got another letter from the State stating that I owe CA Sales tax for the JD bag, and interested is being accrued on the outstanding amount. I immediately emailed that letter to JD, copied state, and asking for JD to provide their CA seller permit # (it is not a confidential information). It was no responses. Few follow up emails later, i started to ask JD for refund of CA states sales taxes so i can remit it back to the State. I followed up, I escalated, I talk to a live person but as of now, I have no refund from JD as well as no seller permit # provided by JD.

I had no choice but paid to State taxes I owe. State told me if this issue is resolved (JD can provide a validation (seller permit #) that all taxes collected from the customer were remitted back to the State), State will help me to process a refund for the amount i recently had to pay.
State also said that similar situation happened in the past with some European bicycle company... for online purchases taxes were collected but not remitted; and at the end, the company issued a refund to customers.

sorry for the long comment
clarification: about 1.5 weeks ago, JD provided DHL bill from my July 23 shipment as a proof that all taxes are paid. I immediately called the State and rep checked all numbers at that bill against their database while i was on hold. Rep also involved her supervisor to make sure she didn't miss anything. DHL bill didn't yield to any results (as far as CA state tax) and I replied to JD stating that.

The DHL Express invoice should be fully itemized showing brokerage fees, and taxes separately from duty.
I would double check the invoice breakout with DHL Express.

If they did bill state tax, then DHL Express has not remitted.

It looks like duty on a leather bag from France is 8% so depending on how much JD charged, that may help figure out what was billed.

I for one appreciate the experience shared by @YGR. Too few people share poor experiences in boards like this for fear of being attacked by defensive fans so we often hear only the good stuffs or people disappear without conclusion. IMO, her experience is jarring and worth reading, not derailing at all. It helps me making an informed choice.

Considered me turned off by this brand. Even if I covet the design, the history, the everything, nothing more turns me off than business that treats its customers this poorly. To those who had good experiences, good for you!

@YGR, I am truly sorry for your experience. You are a better person than me, with your patience, measured responses and quiet insistence I am sure you’ve tried everything incl. the social media path. I wish you a good outcome.

Thank you. As I said, JD shared DHL bill with State and myself via email. I called State right after info was received from JD. State rep and her supervisor concluded that various series of numbers listed on DHL bill are not seller permit #. In other words, State checked all numbers which were listed on a bill, just in case. At that time State told me that it is illegal for DHL to remit State sales tax (DHL is only responsible for US custom duties). I called DHL and it was confirmed. Unfortunately DHL bill didn't help to solve the problem.

Hello everyone!

Last Friday, JD person who was dealing with my case in August (she has been with JD for only few months or weeks and she has no authority to issue refund) mentioned to me that JD is planning to have a meeting to discuss my case. This is the only 'progress' I'm aware off. I sent another follow up email to JD today and will follow up with that person tomorrow morning.

Thank you for the update, @YGR! I'm hoping that this meeting is a positive development. They definitely need to sort out their situation with DHL or FedEx or whatever they are doing with regard to state taxes (beyond US duties).

Hello!
I followed up with JD person who was trying to help me in Aug and she said that JD meeting to discuss my case is scheduled for Monday 9/16... Gosh... clearly there is no rush to solve it
Well, at least your issue is being addressed & you are on the front burner in a manner of speaking
instead of the back burner IYKWIM
Hopefully & fingers crossed that you shall have the outcome you expect.
Keep us posted

I haven’t been on for weeks. Cancer again and I feel that life is too short for the downslide of this forum. Here are my thoughts —

• You either want/ like JD or you don’t. This tax thing shouldn’t ruin it for you if you want to buy a bag.
• I had a problem with some tax ID # thing (+more) I didn’t need when I bought a bag this spring. It was all DHL! They were a mess. It took JD weeks to straighten it out, but they did. DHL was in the wrong. I appreciate JD for getting involved because they weren’t responsible for the mess — it was between DHL and me and DHL wasn’t budging. I won.
• The posted tax mess is unfortunate for sure. It sounds like a mess, but it shouldn’t tank the sentiments about the brand. One bag is going to change everybody’s opinion? It sounds like this bag is a leather FatFIRE. It’s a sad situation, but has taken over.
• I hope the best for the owner and I’ll be back when the problem is resolved. I hope it’s soon! It seems as though gloom has taken over this forum and I need some excitement and positivity.

Be well my TPF friends.:hugs:
