FYI, never heard back from JD with an answer on my 2nd attempt with regard to state sales tax
Wishing you a positive outcome
@YGR, Joseph Duclos just responded:

"Thank you for your patience. I have consulted our team.
With regard to taxes & duties, everything is computed in the website.
Apparently, if there is additional taxes that your state might have, it's on the client"

I just spoke with the State again.
State confirmed that the only taxes outstanding is CA Sales Tax which is required whether item was purchased in CA, or outside of the State (including other countries). There are no additional taxes outstanding in my case. JD charged me CA Sales tax (as it should) but that $$ amounts were not remitted back to the State.

It's astounding to me that the company would not just refund the sales tax amount to the customer at this point so that she can pay the state directly. It is not that much money relative to the cost of any of their bags; at this point, the reputational costs far outweigh the amount they owe this customer.
I will say that the difference in customer service culture was evident to me when I had an issue with my Fontelie, as well.
A fastener on the side of the bag broke within a few days of my owning it and I had to send it back for repair. A US-based company in that situation very well may have just replaced the entire bag given it was so new when the defect surfaced; JD instead made me wait while they repaired it. They sent me a perfume as a gift in apology for the wait, which was a nice gesture, but I didn't want a perfume - I wanted a functional bag that I'd paid thousands of dollars for!

That's the million dollar question.. who does JD send the state tax to not having a seller permit # registered
here in the US
DHL as you comment, doesn't collect state as it is illegal, how is that state tax being submitted
& to what state agency is it being submitted to?

The stonewalling & going around in circles & adding DHL to the mix is all astounding & why JD
would not want to settle this matter ASAP is even more perplexing with information being shared
to them by the state of CA
Quite frankly, whether one is a fan of JD nor not, the manner in which they are handling this situation is
distasteful & good will has been diminished, JMO

thank you. I agree.... over $500 JD is willing to risk their reputation... it just doesn't make sense ...

I see this situation in the same way as you ... why JD makes it so complicated and not cooperating, i could never understand that...
thank you for your support

JD collects all taxes & duties at the time of payment according to their website.
JD is not willing to show you or prove to you that the sales tax was paid to the state of CA
You are getting the run around that DHL takes care of it all, which is illegal for DHL to do
You received a bill showing you owed the state of CA $500+, which you paid & the state
said you would receive the reimbursement if the state could locate a seller permit, which
the state has been unable to do.
With all the paperwork going back & forth to Joseph Duclos it should be clear.
If there was an oversight or whatever word JD would chose to explain, step up to the plate
& just refund the state sales tax to @YGR
This gives me pause for doing business specifically with Joseph Duclos. Shame on them.
Hopefully with all the suggestions that have been shared with you, this will get resolved timely
Wishing you a positive outcome

This is what I think (for what it's worth...lol), the company is having some sort of issue, most likely financial. When the woman I met at the trunk show randomly reached out to me a couple of weeks ago, it did make me stop and wonder if they were "looking for customers" as it had been quite a while since that trunk show. I think either there is a big management change happening, designer change (please say it isn't so), or they are in financial trouble. Maybe it's just the August in Paris issue, but it's now September and these issues should be getting resolved. We were all so excited and now it feels like things have quickly changed. I hope they can get their s*&t together...

This whole business with @YGR is quite upsetting. I'm now wondering if my own state will come back to me asking for state taxes (which are incidentally quite high!) even though I thought everything was taken care of by JD.
The situation is so distasteful that it's also adversely affecting my enthusiasm for the bag I bought. UGH!

There are many companies that have financial challenges & they are usually addressed in a professional manner.
When the communications that have been going back & forth & with the state of CA asking
for specific information & @YGR is still to a certain degree is getting the runaround, there are
just no excuses for that. JD has store in Paris, 54 rue du FSH
JD received 7 millions euros a short time ago from KAIROS.
This is just unacceptable.
