kristie. that may be the case for you and your insurer but to say it is a scam that others do is harsh. there most definately are insurers out there who do just write you a cheque for the insured sum!
in the end you can basically insure everything it is just the question what you are willing to pay for it !

especially if one owns designer pieces (and i do not only mean the big names but also renowned boutique stores) i would never accept a replacement in just the same ct gold weight i would never settle for anything less than an exact "replica" of the stolen item made by the original artisan/brand etc

i am with hiscox btw

Im with chubb (through q-report) and they replace it exactly how you want ... i.e i can get the diamond through the people that mine came from and then use the same jeweller to set it ... i think thats more than fair. And its international too!

I also have State Farm, although my DH takes care of it. To this day, he won't tell me how much my ring is worth (what it has been appraised for) and how much he pays for insurance coverage. In fact, both my engagement ring and wedding band are insured. I definitely think the insurance is a good idea if you don't think you are able to afford replacing the entire ring if something happens to it.

Mine is insured - read your policy carefully. My policy specifies that I get the same ring replacement since I have a branded e-ring and did not just want a "generic" platinum solitaire equivalent with the same carat/specs since DH paid the premium for the Tiffany brand. It's worth it for the peace of mind.

After an unfortunate experience I've recently had, I want to remind/educate you all about insuring your jewelry:

1. Please make sure that you schedule (have riders on) all of your valuable pieces, such as your engagement rings, tennis bracelets, luxury watches, etc. Don't forget about jewelry you may have inherited! My aunt passed down a diamond ring to me, and I completely forgot to get it scheduled on my homeowners insurance!

2. Most homeowners policies only cover up to $1000-$2500 max of your unscheduled jewelry. I have tons of pieces that are only worth $100-$500, so they are not scheduled. However, if your entire jewelry armoire gets ransacked, as mine did, it does not take many of those less expensive pieces to exceed your covered amount!

Moral of the story: Make sure your expensive pieces are scheduled. And if the non-scheduled pieces add up to more than your standard coverage ($1500 in my case), talk to your insurance agent. You can get that amount increased! Just do it before someone wipes you out!

Oh, my you live in the same state as me! I do hope they find whoever did this to you. I'm so sorry to hear that happen to you. Thanks so much for the reminder. I hope you are able to get some of your jewelry back.

Thanks! Unfortunately, it was someone I know, which is especially hurtful. However, the police have not been able to produce enough evidence to make an arrest.

Anyway, I just never really thought about making sure that my $200 earrings, for instance, were insured. I definitely learned a lesson, and I just hope that I can help someone else.

BagLuver.......OMG!!! What a horrible thing to happen to you! And by someone you know? That is so disgusting...I hope karma gets them BIG time!!! I really hope something can be turned up that gets your jewellery back. Biggest ever hugs to you ((((hugs)))))
Its also a very good point that you make about listing EVERYTHING,its very hard to try and remember everything when you have to make a claim and are extremely stressed and upset.Sometimes your memory can really let you down on important details.

On a side note,I worked in the jewellery trade a long time, and assisted many, many devastated folk who had precious and sentimental items stolen with insurance replacement claims. After liaising with police and insurance companies over the years, the general consensus by both is not to have any kind of jewellery box or armoire on show, its the first thing thieves look for,as its all stored in one place you run such a high risk of losing the lot in one go.
