^I haven't seen that show, but I'll watch now just to see her ring!

OK...I can picture your room. have you thought about painting the ceiling a color? like maybe very light khaki (yes, I'm back to that)? I think you can find some VERY cool curtains with color to add a lot to the room. I think a rug would be wonderful too. do your chairs have seat cushions? that is another opportunity for fabric.

have you ever shopped at home goods (do they have them up your way? part of marshalls/tj maxx)? they have fantastic rugs there. as long as you're not in a hurry, you can find what you want at the price you want to pay. they also have lots of ready-made curtains too. of course, pottery barn has great curtains as does restoration hardware.

what color are your dishes? do you eat in this room regularly? or just on special occasions? your color choices are red & blue...do you want to emphasize one in the room?

^you are SO right! little angel!!!

the colors in your wood tones are my FAVORITE!!! & the colors in the runner/rug are PERFECT to go with the flag. I'd suggest looking for a large rug to go under the table in those same tones, but make sure it's DARK to hide stains. the rug doesn't have to be a priority.

as far as curtains are concerned...how country do you want to go? I'm assuming not very...just a traditional american look with a touch of country/colonial. is that right?

Yeah, I definitely don't want hard core country. I want it to say elegant, but casual. I'm a mix and match dishes kind of gal. I am obsessed with Pottery Barn, if that helps.

Wow, she was so little in that pic, right around a year I'd say. She's 4 now, and so much fun. I better get my work done so I can go scoop her up from school!

then you will love the show "sarah's house"...it's the same style.

if it were me, I'd hang a curtain rod across the top of the window...if you have low ceilings, then close to the ceiling. make sure that the rod is wider than the windows, & hang the curtains OUTSIDE of the window (when open). it will eat up some of the paneling, add a lot of color, not block any light, allow you to close them at night, & keep your shutters (which I love) fully operational. can you picture it? I'd go for a patterned fabric on the curtains. I'm going to look at the pottery barn & restoration hardware sites.

oh, this is completely unsolicitated advice, so I apologize if it's annoying. I'm getting excited for you & your project, & now I'm realizing that it might seem bossy & nosey. just tell me to shut up if you need to.

you know...if you're anti-curtain (which is almost unbelievable to me since I'm such a fabric-a-holic :p), you could paint the window trim & shutters in a color...

like red...

or blue if red is scary...
