Hello Leah

I was wondering if you could help me figure out if these two Gwyneth Paltrow rings are JAR. Thank you so much for your knowledge; wish you could share more.

Hello Leah

Hi Nancy, really difficult to tell if those are JAR rings as the JAR markings would be hidden. The diamond ring in the photo is Gwyneth's engagement ring right? I don't know which jeweler was supposed to have made Gwyneth's engagement ring but haven't heard any link to JAR. Gwyneth does own and regularly wear a simple JAR necklace with a small pendant that looks a bit like a waterfall. I have several friends who've seen her with the necklace, which has been acknowledged as a JAR piece.

A bit OT but I've heard that Gwyneth's favorite jeweler at the moment is Anna Hu (whom I wrote about here a few years back). Anna Hu is also the favored jeweler of the moment of both Oprah and Madonna.
Gwyneth wore an Anna Hu cuff in this year's Oscars (the entire outfit paired w the diamond cuff was simply fabulous.) She also wore Anna Hu at the Met Gala.

But BACK to JAR :smile1:
A few years back there were rumours of a planned JAR retrospective/exhibit to be held in New York (supposedly either this year or next), but I've heard because of Mr. Rosenthal's declining health, that has been indefinitely put on hold. Further, it's unfortunate that several of his longtime craftsmen are also quite old already and unable to work any more which is why it is rumoured Mr Rosenthal's production output has declined significantly over the years. Another widely spread rumour is that he now chooses to make pieces mainly for sentimental reasons i.e. only for his close personal friends who are not necessarily part of the elite. He certainly will never have to worry about his retirement fund!

Here's a very interesting video which shows some of the JAR pieces from the Lily Safra collection.

Thank you for the video Leah. I think Gwyneth's diamond is an Ashoka cut diamond from William Goldberg, who supplies JAR with stones. If you look at this ring it is quite similar to GP's. Maybe she got the stone from Goldberg and got JAR to set it.

Interesting! Quite possible since her ring has a similar setting to this other JAR string ring, see picture

The only thing that's making me wonder is the setting of Gwyneth's ring, particularly the base and the raised section in between Gwyneth's diamond and the band, which you can see more clearly in the picture below.

Mr. Rosenthal is famous for his "invisible" settings unlike Gwyneth's ring. That's a very chunky, thick obvious base which I've never seen in his ring designs. And not sure why there is a raised section there, seems unnecessary in the design (in the JAR picture I posted above, there is a double pave setting to hold the big diamond in place so there is function to the design.)

JAR usually likes to have very thin flat settings or a very flat base - not just on his rings but on his brooches and even bangles. He tends to like the base to be flat and thin because he supposedly likes the design to look like it's floating on air (but you're not supposed to see the setting or the base!) And that kind of aesthetic really highlights his excellent workmanship because you need to have superb skills to make a very complex design look "light" so the jewels look like they are floating on air (does that make sense?)

However looking at Gwyneth's pic again, the pave part is thin enough that is could look like JAR? :smile1:

Can you post a picture of the waterfall necklace?

Personally think that JAR is one of the most prolific jewelry designers we have today.

If anyone can look through his book JAR from the exhibition that took place in
London, please do so... you will enjoy these "jewels" immensely the same
goes for the catalogue on Ellen Barkin's jewels that were auctioned off..

Worth going to a book stosre or library to see...

I think he's one of the most prolific designers - with some of the smallest production.

Most of his pieces are OAK or custom - so even if he only makes 50 pieces a year and 25 unique designs... and then if you spread that over 20 years...

How many designers have a 500+ catalogue?
