You are the first person to recognize the Lutens bottle in my avatar. My avatar is not Borneo though - no matter how pretty the yellow Borneo bottle may be, the scent is too impossible for me to like. :)

I have also managed to not succumb to the JAR fragrances. They are so unique and truly unusual but I refuse to pay more than $700 to own one.
It looked like an LE decorated bottle (that's why I guessed Borneo :p), but now I see that it was the shadow from the fence.

Thank you but I am by no means an expert :blushing:.

Off the top of my head, I think some of the jewelers that are on par with JAR today include James de Givenchy (I am absolutely in love with his pieces for Taffin), Anna Hu (her craftsmanship is amazing, she is being called the "new JAR" and is the current favorite jeweler of Oprah and Madonna, one of her pieces is on my Christimas wishlist :D) and some would say perhaps Viren Bhagat, the "JAR of India".

In my humble opinion, JAR designs were truly unique and special maybe 10-15 years ago, but there have been so many talented, innovative and creative jewelers that have emerged since then. In the past, people would say you could immediately spot a JAR piece for its uniqueness but I do not think the same would hold true today.

Also, Rosenthal and Jeannet have become very selective (rightfully so) over who to sell to because there were reports they wanted to avoid the type of clients who don't appreciate jewelry but only want to buy JAR to be able to boast to their friends that they "own JAR". Kind of like people who don't care about Hermes and the quality, but want to buy a birkin just so they can tell people they own a birkin LOL.

I have a few personal anecdotes from buyers/owners of JAR but am reluctant to share on a public forum but one piece of information I can share is they have exceptionally good lawyers :D. Their lawyers at one point threatened to sue a printer in New York for reprinting (w/out permission) the famous & coveted JAR book that is sold (if you are lucky enough to find it!) for several thousands today.

Btw, this pair of earrings just sold at Christie's the other day for USD650,000. This was part of the Ellen Barkin collection sold also at Christie's a few years ago and has been re-auctioned again. It originally sold for 710,000 and the other day sold for 650,000. It's interesting how it sold for less than the previous auction.

so about 6 years ago I became an apprentice jeweler and fell in love with JAR's work. I do this for a living and have real respect for his work and how difficult it is to achieve such perfection. About 5 years ago I did some research and through a professor at my university found his book for sale. *IF* you can find it, it's an AMAZING book. Its over 700 pages of his pieces. I'm actually selling my JAR book. It's the only one for sale I can find on the internet. There are 24 of them in different libraries in the USA if you can find one close enough. It is a massive 14 pound book. Printed in 2003 ISBN:095430960X. Hope this helps you with your research!

I have I piece of jewelry that is signed JAR on the back. It also says sterling. But it has no gems or stones on it anywhere. Could this still be an authentic JAR piece. A jewelry expert says that she believes it is, but I have not had it appraised yet. Did he make pieces without any gemstones?

Yes JAR has produced many pieces without gems. In the early days, he even made very special non jewelry pieces such as jewelry boxes and watches, a best friend is lucky enough to own a rare bubble watch.

Please post a picture of your piece, am sure we'd love to see it! :smile1:

Here's some pics of what I have. Sorry about the pic of the mark on the back, I had to use a magnifying glass just to get that shot.

Thanks for sharing a picture.
The JAR mark is not like the ones I've seen from the JAR pieces I've come across. I've seen markings only with JAR, JAR Paris and JAR's Paris.
I'm by no means an expert on JAR so I'm sure someone with more experience with JAR can give you much better advice :smile1:.
There is a very knowledgeable person on JAR jewelry at Christie's NY, so if you are near the area, you might want to set an appointment.

Best of luck and keep us posted! :smile1:

Here's a chance to buy some JAR 18kt gold diamond sapphire emerald earrings.
Sothebys sale April 14 (pics on line soon.)
Unfortunately the estimate on them is USD $100,000 to $200,000
With how desirable his items are, they will probably go for the estimate +.

would love to see more JAR pieces!!

So would I!! I agree with what Mistikat said about Ellen Barkin selling her jewels. I believe she kept 1 or 2 pieces. She obviously looked upon all of this as a retirement policy and probably encouraged the ex to purchase. He certainly is not a stupid man, so I am sure he knew what was up. JAR is so select in his clientele that the little people will never have a chance:p Unless they overpay at an auction:laugh:

I was looking at his designs to get ideas about how make some new pieces from stones that I have inherited.
