but he was their son-in-law, loved by his wife....suing the family is suing him....and I don't think they needed the money. so while everyone here seems to believe the kennedys are/were evil, money wasn't going to bring their daughters back. He made a costly mistake. It was sad and tragic. does the money they got in the settlement keep them warm at night?

I am not the suing type either but frankly I can’t judge a grieving mother.

Plus, in their case it was most likely covered by insurance.

Back in the day, I wondered the same, why did Carolyn's family sue. From what I've read over the years though, John and Carolyn's marriage was ending. Her sister, Lauren, went with them on that trip to serve as a buffer between them.
The Kennedys would have done their best to discredit Carolyn in every way in order to help preserve John's reputation and political future. There were already all kinds of reports about her showing up in the press. Some may have been true. Others maybe not. John was likely not blameless in the decline of their marriage. There are awful photos of them physically fighting in a park at one point.
I'd guess that the relationship between the families was not good. The Bessette family may have felt that Carolyn was about to be discarded, with the Kennedys preparing to paint John as the victim. Then they were also treated poorly in the aftermath of the crash. So, they wanted to make the Kennedys pay in some public way that made clear they were very, very angry and blamed John entirely.

I don’t think the lawsuit was intended to force someone to pay at all. Maybe there were some intentions to stick it to the Kennedys arising out of grief but a lawsuit is a very common practice after a tragedy like this. That is what insurance is for.
Apparently John and Caroline didn't have a great relationship at the time of his death. I'd read that they were arguing about furniture their mother had left them. She apparently didn't have any love lost for Carolyn, and she unleashed her husband, by all accounts not well liked by many, to, IMO, torment Carolyn's grieving mother. I don't think Caroline is a sweet, simple innocent in all of this. She knows how to keep her hands clean in the press.
They were circulating stories like she was vain and they were late because she had her nails done over and over.
they were blaming her as if she was piloting the plane.
And logically this was coming from Caroline k camp as she was his heir.
Furthermore, her family was also entitled to her estate as she died childless.
I am sure she does not need tha money.
To her credit, few people act elegantly while in the throes of deep grief.

Someone who was approached to invest in the magazine said that John couldn't articulate a clear vision for the magazine, and also had no experience as a writer, as an editor, or as a journalist, so the idea was ludicrous to this investor. At the time of his death, he doesn't seem like he was in a very good place. The magazine was failing, it wasn't being taken seriously, and his marriage was failing. The divorce would likely have been messy and expensive and who knows what Carolyn might have said about him in the aftermath. He was also fighting with his sister over the disposition of their late mother's personal belongings and whether they should be auctioned, or not. They were apparently barely speaking, him and his sister, at the time.
When I look back, I realize that I don't recall ever hearing him speak or interviewed. Who knows if he would have actually made a good candidate at all.

He had adhd and other learning differences so he always had trouble in school.
For example,He had a hard time passing the NY bar.
I read that he wanted to be an actor at one point and with his charisma and beauty, plus connections he would have been wildly successful imo.
As far as him getting the governorship over the Cuomos dead body.
His sister at one point considered the senate, Hillary got the job instead.
