Is it real? That dreaded question...

I've never had anyone ask if something is real, but my parents gave me a rather large piece of diamond jewelry for our housewarming present & one person asked me how much it cost. I couldn't believe it. He then went on to speculate aloud about the cost. I just shrugged & said I've never had the bad manners to ask about the cost of a gift.

People are strange.

This happens to me a lot and it really bugs me!! Why would i know how much it cost when it's a gift!! ^^ I might say that next time!

Once when i was at university by DF bought me a lovely promise ring and a girl said to me no way is that real the stone is too big!! It wasn't even a big stone!!
Why would you say that?! :confused1: It's just nasty!! lol

I agree that if someone has to ask you if it is real, they really are thinking in the back of their mind that you are wearing a fake. A person who has any amount of class shouldn't even ask such a question. I guess my answer to "is it real" would be "why do you want to know that"?

When someone asks me how much something costs, and I really don't feel the need to tell them, I give them a ridiculous number, like $1 or $1,000,000. That usually gets the message across that it's none of their business!

I think questions to anyone about the cost or validity of item is in poor taste. I have not been asked this questions many times; on the occasions where I have I have been firm -- saying "Yes. period and then stating that it was rude to ask. If you stick your nose in others business constantly someone should cut it off or at least give you a lesson in manners.

I don't think i have ever asked anyone if it is real. Except maybe my bff about some jewellery from her mother but that was because it looked like an engagment ring and I was enquiring whether he mother had given her, her old engagement when she got an upgrade.

I've been asked if costume jewellery is real. Normally the person is much younger than myself and does realise that they sound rude ie. early teens.

I've never been asked if my ering is real but i did have a friend ask how many carrats it was, where it was from and i knew what her next question would be... how much did it cost.

After we got the engagement ring I made FI promise that neither of us would ever reveal to ANYONE how much my ering cost. His father and mother are quite forceful and he can get intimidate by his father as he likes to talk money. It is very modest, especially compared to some out there. But has got lots of comments from family about the size of diamond and they money it would have cost.

I really wasn't sure how to react to these comments so I just thanked them for their compliement.

My hair stylist asked me what my engagement ring was appraised for and then started throwing out estimates. I wanted to run out of there. We are not close enough to discuss such things. I though it was tacky to say the least.

On another note, I found this to be rude and odd as well. When my fiance's brother's girlfriend saw my e-ring she gave a quick glance and said it was nice and that was all. Fine with me, I said thanks and left it at that. Then my future brother-in-law told her it was a Tiffany ring and she suddenly was gushing about how beautiful it was. Grabbing my hand and the whole nine.

People are just strange sometimes. :shrugs:

That's so funny, I notice people do that too. When you're wearing some designer brand, all of the sudden, it's way more special/beautiful than it was as first glance.

I get the opposite reaction. I wear my nice Fossil watch into high-end jewelry store and they go, "*Gasp* What kind of watch is that, it's so unique, I love it!"

I tell them it's a Fossil and they're like, "Oh... *face falls*"

One of my attendings once stopped, in the middle of our pre-surgical scrub, leaned over to look at my diamond necklace, then said, "Is that real?" When I answered in the affirmative, he said "Really?"

I mean, aside from the fact it is so rude to even ask, why would I lie? To impress you?

it's liking asking if your boobs are real!

I think that's a perfectly acceptable comeback to this question! Or, something like "Are YOU for real?" while wearing a WTF expression.

The only time I've been asked this question and found it acceptable was when I was behind the counter in a jewelry store showing a piece.

I've had people ask if my jewelry is real and I just look at them and say, "Of course. I have a wonderful fiance." I don't try to be rude, bc I know the reason they are asking is bc they are jealous and they wish they had a nice ring or jewelry. I think this makes them angrier and I love it!

I had a close girlfriend ask me if my diamond studs were real. I think it's fine among friends -- we were talking about investing in jewelry and I think she was probing on what I invest in and do not (real diamond studs not being a real concern of mine).

I would be deeply shocked if I ever heard anybody ask about the authenticity of somebody's engagement ring, though.

I have never had anyone ask if my jewelry was real, but I have had LOTS of people ask me if my bags were real, then follow-up with the "how much was it". I am always shocked and appalled that a stranger would have that kind of audacity.

I would never tell a stranger, if they asked if some jewelry that I was wearing was "real." I would say "no, of course not!" so that they wouldn't follow me and try to steal it!
i agree that this is a concern....obviously it depends on the situation (i don't see this happening at a dinner party), but it's important to be aware.
