Is anyone else tired of the Chanel Bag trend?

First of all: I am not tired of my Chanel bags/shoes/accessories (they were just too expensive!) And I will enjoy them whenever I can and feel comfortable wearing them.
Nonetheless, I also have noticed how people buy/ show off luxury and how it is regarded “normal“ on social media. Shocking. Unhealthy. Dare I say inappropriate? :hrmm:

But hasn’t all this focus on materialism and normalizing buying 9k bags been detrimental? Gen z and millennials have
perfected the art of flexing. You don’t think flexing doesn’t harm how people feel about themselves? For example many studies show that social media is hurting the self esteem of many gen z and millenials. There are also studies of how economic inequalities result in people wanting to feel better about themselves at their financial expense. But the most interesting studies of all are the studies that show people generally prefer to be friends with those who don’t have luxury and luxury has a tendency to make people selfish.

Thank you for these links! :flowers: I‘ve just read both articles. To an extend I am not surprised by these studies.
On the other hand I think it’s quite interesting how people choose to wear logos to events or rather take a luxury car/purse/watch when meeting new people/potential new friends.
Because:
There are a ton of threads in this forum, which show how TPF members are quite the opposite. :giggle:
Hiding our luxury purchases, prefering non-logo RTW, not taking bags/accessories to certain locations or not using them around certain people and in certain areas (be it family, friends, colleagues, clients, travel, or whatever…).

I am one of the persons, who quickly feels uncomfortable wearing Chanel.
I like my Chanel scarf, because wrapped around my neck nobody can tell which brand it is from. I love my Chanel pumps with the tiny logos on the heel, because most won’t notice and I enjoy my Chanel SLGs, because nobody sees them in my bag. It is for me. I enjoy it for myself! (Like everybody/most here on tpf…)
My Chanel bags get used very rarely, because of that. Just this weekend I caught myself turning my Chanel bag with the lock to my body,… so I could go under the radar. Still, I loved wearing it. I know…strange…:amuse:

What I am trying to say: I care how people see me. And I don’t want them to think I am superficial and a logo-person. In return I don’t mind making friends who love luxury themselves and who obviously wear logos.

And: I refuse to think that carrying a Chanel-anything would prevent me from helping someone on the street :eek:that is just strange to me… very weird…

anyway- thanks for reading.
I have been enjoying this thread and will keep following.

i think you can appreciate a bag for its beauty and history and workmanship but not want to carry it anymore bc it’s become too trendy and too much in the public eye. Maybe it’s about wanting something different or maybe low key or maybe it’s about safety. The problem these days is luxury buying has become so normalized in social media. If a teenager or a college student wants to go buy a 9k jumbo, they should go for it. But that’s not normal and social media is normalizing these things.

As for other gens being in debt, sure there are those in the older gens who very well may be. But, that’s not the norm and not at least where I live. Most people in my age bracket and older aren’t running around with luxury bags or keeping up with the joneses bc they are the joneses.

This was a Real Housewives tagline

I agree on Chanel being oversaturated on social media, and while it maybe working great for them on one side, like people feeling fomo with constant prices increases, there are some people who won’t buy into a brand as it does not really feel exclusive anymore and is overexposed. How many YouTube videos are there of Chanel bags, collections and so? If we take other luxury brands that are not as heavily advertised/showcased on social media like Moynat, Valextra, Goyard, Delvaux, I feel like these are the brands that feel way more exclusive. It’s just different consumer base, some buy into trend, hype and want the latest Chanel bag or go on Hermes “journey” for status, and some look for more understated brands. Yes, in real life depending on where you live, it’s not like you can see these bags on everyone, but you can’t takeaway the fact that social media plays much into what people view as trend and are buying into.

Personally, even I don’t own any Chanel bag yet and don’t know whether I really want to own one, after seeing it everywhere on Instagram and YouTube, I feel like in a way I had enough of it and it doesn’t feel special anymore, but rather ubiquitous and not worth it for current prices. Most people buy Chanel and Hermes for wrong reasons, like status signals and not for their heritage and design and I’m not into this game of showing off and being on trend or having to own one just for the sake of CF/B/K being the ultimate bag. Also with constant new bag releases, both LV, Dior and Chanel feel like fast fashion, nothing that really last and stands the test of time except the same old classics, but the current prices don’t reflect the quality or worth. I also hate people on social media saying their bags are “investments”…. C’mon if you’re wearing this bag every other day, it’s not an investment, as with wear and tear you won’t recoup the full price+ premium on the bag.

I am surprised to hear this because while Chanel has a lot of clout/long standing brand recognition I actually don’t see it much. I am in the LA area but even when visiting Beverly Hills, I don’t see Chanel nearly as much as I see LV and Hermes mini Kelly’s or Birkins. I also feel like Botega Jody, Dior Saddle or Prada re-edition nylon are the influencer bags I see everywhere (online and irl). I do frequently see WOCs and occasional CF but I don’t find Chanel that ubiquitous. Curious if that is because it’s so hard to find and the other bags mentioned are far easier to find and less expensive (barring the Hermes bags mentioned)

I rarely see Chanel IRL as well (NYC area). Saw more Gabrielle during the past holidays and that's it. Online, however, you see Chanel on almost every influencer's social media, so maybe that's why it might seem "everywhere".

Agree with rarely seeing Chanel INR in NYC. In the past three months I have seen two vintage double flaps in black, two old medium boy bags in black (one being crumpled calf boy jacket with aged gold hardware which I sort of regret missing out on), one seasonal flap, one rectangle mini in grey (unsure if it was authentic as it looked sort of fake, but who knows), and three 19s (one in black and two in light beige). I have never seen chevron CF on the street, which makes me sad since I think chevron CF are stunning. I have seen three Birkins (two in black and one in gold). Almost never see any colors like blue, green, red, yellow, or grey in any brand bags. I think that for one of fashion capitals of the world that’s not many at all.
I have definitely saw more Chanel and Hermes bags IRL in 2015 and 2016. I don’t know is pandemic has something to do with it, but I certainly see less designer bags on the streets in the past years.

I don’t see Chanel very often mostly LV and sometimes a Gucci bag here and there. I live in So Cal and I shop at Topanga Mall which is a high end mall with many locals and not touristy like rodeo drive. When I was there a couple weeks ago I only saw one Chanel WOC everyone else had an LV. In the past I’ve seen a B or K only a few times and a Chanel maxi once. I also think it’s due to social media that people may feel like they are everywhere. People do post and YT videos on them because it gets them the views and followers they are so desperately seeking.

I live in NYC and I see a lot of chanel RTW and CF bags in a limited five block radius from Hermes Madison to chanel 57. i can count the restaurants in that radius where every other patron is wearing the chanel CF or hermes BKC or E / VCA cartier stack and premier designer RTW, usually chanel, but sometimes dior. What I think is a bit incongruous is seeing the number of clients wearing H bags on line to get into chanel 57. In other parts of NYC, not so much.

note: I wear H bags — mainly my mini Della cavalleria — and occasionally a reissue, and almost never see either)

I think the younger generations are starting younger these days and are drawn more to LV vs Chanel. I like Chanel handbags (I have 2 now, as I sold 1 small double flap) but if you see 1 Chanel bag you practically seen them all. They all look similar imo. Perhaps it's because LV has more variety and are more trendy which gets the younger generation interested. I have a little bit of everything (except Hermes) and have so different bags as I just wasn't drawn to them. LV has been getting more attention it seems.

I agree people are starting younger. I got my first luxury bag (LV speedy) when I was 30. I find many of LV styles to be to trendy and loud especially the bright colors ways of the seasonal bags. I love Chanel it’s so Beautiful and elegant in my opinion. I have only 2 a small CF and coco handle. I also have a variety of LV, a Gucci and a B25. I still like LV but I don’t go for the bright colors, all my bags are black (except my LV canvas bags) cause it’s what I like. I’m currently looking to get the new LV Madeleine BB it’s like my Chanel coco Handle, I really like that style.

Tired of Chanel? No. I definitely wouldn’t be on the Chanel forum looking at more if I were tired! I barely see Chanel unless I go to particular areas like the areas that have high end shopping and dining.

As a person in her forties that got my first lv in sixth grade (my aunt gave me hers!) young people have been noticing what our families do and want that. I was interested in bags very early on because my aunt and step mom were bag people! I was also interested in designer shoes very early on because my dad was a sneaker head! I think some have been getting bags/shoes fairly young! Again social media just bring forward that young people are buying.
