You gave him an honest answer.
It's so fun to do that kind of stuff!
When I was in the Marines. I was admin, so I had the training/test scores. It was time for yearly reviews.
Sergeant: MyLastName, do we use the most recent PFT (physical fitness test) scores?
Me (perfectly straight face and normal tone of voice): No, Sergeant. We use the scores from two years ago. (Look back at my computer screen and continue typing.)

My Staff Sergeant, sitting at his desk several feet away, about choked on the food he was eating.
Sergeant: Email me my people's scores.
Me: Yes, Sergeant.
Technically, since he outranked me, Sergeant he could have gone to the Gunny (Boss) and complained I was being insubordinate. But as the admin I knew if he did that Gunny would ask for details. When Sergeant explained, Gunny would say, "Ask a stupid question, expect a stupid answer." Sergeant knew it too, and didn't go tattle on me. He also never asked me a dumb question again.
