Influencers and Hermes

Bit off topic (since it’s not just related to H) but I’m reminded of a conversation with someone who works in the influencer business. He said that (at least in the country where he was working at) a rough rule of thumb to judge an influencer with is 10%. Meaning you check if their “like” numbers reaches 10% of their follower number. If it’s significantly lower, then you become a bit wary because they may not be “alive” anymore (original convo was not in English but that’s basically the word he used lol). You don’t work with someone just because of their follower count (and asking for a price tag to reflect that) if their followers aren’t actually around, whether because they’ve lost their followers’ interest over time or because the follower count includes a lot of bot accounts they paid for (a quite common practice apparently). Anyways since that convo I have definitely noticed how even some really big names with millions of followers only have a couple thousands of likes.

Now more on topic with some H related social media stuff I’ve noticed recently…I use RED (equivalent of Instagram) where I follow some accounts sharing Hermes and other goodies; not influencers but more so people who are genuinely just posting stuff they bought and love (and sometimes didn’t love and won’t hesitate to criticize). I only click the follow button after coming across someone multiple times and checking out their post history. Normally they tend to be people not showing their faces at all, with follower count maybe just reaching 4 digits if not lower, and if they get bigger / start posting any “sponsored” content or “giveaway” to “treat their fans” or singing praises for a business I immediately unfollow.

Anyways the point is I’ve noticed multiple such accounts that I follow have now become inactive / deleted. One I know is specifically because she became tired of the drama that came with sharing luxury items on a public platform, not to mention the privacy concerns (RED does not offer private accounts like Instagram). So for me personally, unfortunately the type of people I want to follow sadly end up being ones who hate being an actual influencer!

This has been a topic in other groups apparently. I hope she didn’t sell it because it’s gorgeous.

This is why I do not like her anymore. I am highly suspicious that it is her SO. I remember she was VERY lucky to be granted a SO very early on in her history of shopping with H in NYC and I can’t believe she is now just flipping it on the reseller market. There are people who wait years to get a SO and ones that are truly loyal and appreciative of the brand.

I’m inclined to agree with you. Her bag from her YT reveal vs the bag currently for sale at FP. Stitching and leather grains are identical. I always get a kick out of when people show off bags here or on other SM before flipping them because we can always tell.

+1000 to all your comments.

I love that you compared the stitching and grains haha I didn't think to do that. I was particularly suspicious because A.) She never really seemed to actually wear the bag and B.) When she created her SO she didn't share the specs right away so it would be unlikely that if someone who follows her wanted the same bag after seeing her reveal, they would have received it the same year . This is clearly living in my head rent free lol.

Anyways, I like Alyssa generally, but there are genuine customers who can't get bags because of the culture that influencers are creating around Hermes. And that sucks.

I don’t know if people know this or not, but an influencer like Alyssa or Tamara or Karen Britchik don’t need appointments. They might say they got an appointment or their significant other got an appointment but in all honesty they are “taken care of” by Hermes. If they all came out and just said that they use their connections at Hermes to get bags there would outrage so they hide it. Those are FACTS ! Also no one should be upset or mad at the influencers this is what Hermes has chosen to do. It’s free marketing for the brand and it has clearly been working.
I like this perspective and it makes sense, however, I think that these influencers should also have a responsibility to uphold a certain degree of transparency with the people that are consuming their content and making them money (e.g. if they have a spend history, they don't need to tell us how much they've spent but they shouldn't hide the fact that they've made several purchases). In addition, IMO, Hermes making it easy for them to get bags because they're influencers doesn't make it okay for them to take bags and opportunities that they don't actually care for just so that they can make content..

Point is stop bashing the influencer turn your dissatisfaction at Hermes since they are deciding to give bags to anyone with 100k followers on YouTube . FACTS
Wrong, I bash them cos I see them as attention seeking pretenders that think what they have to offer is so valuable that they need to post content publicly with their faces shown in it. Many need to buy and sell or buy and return just to keep up producing valuable 'content'. The ones who can afford seem to never be satisfied with what they acquire. Frankly I find it pretty pathetic and have no respect for any of them.

People are allowed to comment on whomever they please. This whole thread is dedicated to this topic. Being an influencer doesn't shield you from criticism. In fact, it puts you in the spotlight/under the microscope for everything you do.
Being dissatisfied by someone and voicing your opinion is not always "bashing". Just like saying someone is extremely overestimating/delusional about something is not name calling as your tried to pass off in your previous poorly veiled threat.

Also, making a statement, providing no proof and adding FACTS at the end doesn't make it any more true. FACTS

Lol I get your point. But also FACTS: Influencers are a huge part of the change in culture, too. For example, influencers always talking about resale value and Hermes bags as an investment or making viewers think declining a bag is forbidden changes the culture around the brand. Have you seen how many SOs and other barely used bags are on FP? That's not entirely because of Hermes' marketing...

I agree they do owe their viewers a certain level of honesty and respect. But Hermes also expects them to uphold some level of ambiguity when it comes to bags. Take Cassie Thorpe as an example, she moved to NYC and within 2 months and one blanket unboxing she was given a mini Kelly. Therefore it’s safe to assume they gave her a mini Kelly because of her following on social media. There was no pre-spend to speak of, no waiting.

Yes, absolutely. And I respect that and I think that's the degree of transparency we need. Cassie aside (I love her btw), there are other influencers that are dishonest and make it seem like they are able to get everything they want without building a relationship with the brand. I know there are unicorn stories but some people are just plain dishonest.

With all due, an influencer flipping a bag is not the reason there are so many Hermes bags on the resale market.

A lot of judgement here. Ask yourself why you’re so triggered.

I also wouldn't believe everything an influencer said on YouTube. Are we 100% sure she only purchased the blanket and nothing else to get offered the mini kelly? Could it be she bought some other Hermes items but never unboxed it on YouTube?

I know some YouTube content creators irl and the personality / content they put out do not mirror who they are irl. I take everything on YouTube with a pound of salt

When it comes to that particular influencer yes I’m sure. I speak FACTS

Wait are you telling me that people that have no accountability on what they say and everything to gain from projecting a false narrative of their lifestyle, would lie???

Next youre going to tell me reality shows are scripted!
