Influencers and Hermes

I don't follow anyone, I just look at pics on TPF and generally get inspired and interested by seeing items on here. I know 'influencers' get items gifted and loaned so they're inclined to LOVE everything so much!! That's just fake--the info on TPF tends to be much more real and the pics everyone posts are far more inspiring and enabling! Someone in the H forum had posted this pic several years ago and I was just in love with this look and had to get a Kelly so I could look like this

Perhaps I was naive, but I had no idea there were so many loaner or ultra high end counterfeit bags on the market. It kind of makes me wonder how many of these new influencers actually own real items? :hrmm: Especially knowing the quota system, it seems like some influencers get a quota offering every few months. I'm not even talking a regular quota bag, but a mini Kelly or KP, which we know are hard to come by. Hmmmm.....

My DH because he knows of my interest/obsession with Hermès often unearths a youtube for me to watch that he thinks I may enjoy.
Last night I made the schoolgirl error of actually watching "I Vlogged my Hermes leather appointment' by someone called double vanilla (The clue is in her chosen name I suppose)...
It was THE most boring, repetitive, self important irritating thing I've ever watched.
I had to keep fast forwarding, For instance about 10 minutes if not longer of her filming herself in a mirror talking about what she wore to her appointment (meh!)
Then in the actual appointment endlessly looking at the same 3 bags repeating Kelly 25, Kelly 28, this is the 25, this is the 28 and on and on and on...I couldn't say how long this went on for I fast forwarded to her leaving the store with her purchases repeating again and again "I dont believe it! I dont believe it" or words to that effect-
Honestly If I'd been the SA I would have said "ok.. you've seen the bags please make a decision or I'll have to offer them to one of the next appointments "-Made me also realise WHY appointment times keep changing-probably due to idiots like this spending hours gazing at themselves in a mirror holding a bag.
At this point I said to my husband "I cant stand this...lets just turn the damn thing off"
I feel a mug for actually wasting what time I did watching this rubbish but I like to at least fein interest because its sweet of DH to find these things for me.
I'm sorry if anyone actually loves these sorts of vlogs But personally I found it nauseating.
a bit show-offy, and lacking in style.
I became a fan of the brand because I found it stylish and tasteful.
This video was the opposite to both those things.
Rant over...

She is indeed repetitive. She also sounds rather superficial when she interviews people about their outfit.

I like to think of myself as very much my own person whose choices certainly would not be affected by an advertisement, let alone an 'influencer'.
BUT
I sometimes have to admit that something I have seen has made me want or indeed decide to buy.
Unless we go around with our eyes closed, we cannot avoid external influenCES (note, not CERS) completely.

That being said,
decades ago the Mies van der Rohe dictum 'less is more'
became a mantra for my aesthetic choices
and, although I am sure he would hate the epithet,
Norman Foster, if not an 'influencer' validates some of my stylistic choices.

True influencers inspire incidentally - not as a job

Who was that film star that chose a bag as a prop in the 1950s?

This reminded me of that Korean drama called Reflection of You where the lead actress destroyed her own Hermes bag like literally slapping it on the pavement. My heart was having a little panic attack watching that. But in saying that, I was like... When do I ever get to slap an Hermes bag on the ground like she did and feel like it's not a big deal? I was like... Yeah. She's ultra rich in the drama OK.

Just saw Cassie Thorpe's unboxing of her mini kelly in orange PHW chevre mysore. It's honestly quite wild that she got this offer in the span of 2 months after starting to buy at H meatpacking (nyc) and only bought 2 twilly's + olympe ear cuff + blanket + fuzzy oran sandals + some travel perfumes. that's not even 3K USD altogether.

She said her SA didn't expect her to get her a bag, and a MKII at that, this quickly. She thought the NY meatpacking store is more about "whatever bags they get in go to the person that will enjoy it and not resell it" and not about "spend and you shall receive". Yeah if I got a MKII in 2 months after spending 3K I would think that too.

I hear H meatpacking is a more chill store (and I've seen this firsthand) compared to H madison but still? it must be full of extra high spenders.

I like Cassie so I'm going to give the benefit of doubt that she didn't buy it from a reseller and disguise it as store-bought (as so many of the posts here have explicitly pointed out about others). Maybe she's very memorable to her SA because of her fun personality. :shrugs:

I watched the same video - I like her alot - and she received a very hard to get Mini Kelly in Orange (poppy)!
I only shopped at Meatpacking a few times as I preferred Madison and Wall Street. The SA I had in MP was snooty to me with a really cool vibe like he only came out at night (LOL). Cassie really hit the jackpot or preference was made because she is an influencer. I am seeing influencers or youtubers unboxing bag offers - some with little or no purchase history - I on the otherhand spend $$$$ to get my offers.

I can’t comment of the practice at H Meatpacking, or if the influencer is telling a true story. I find the SA‘s reaction that you mentioned a bit strange -“She said her SA didn't expect her to get her a bag, and a MKII at that, this quickly.”
If client is to be offered a QB, the SA has to nominate her to get the approval from the SM. If the SA didn’t expect her to get a bag esp.MKII that quickly, did this offer go through a normal approval process? Did this SA actually nominate her to get a QB? Sounds very out-of-the-norm to me…

I agree. Definitely points to the bag not going through the “normal” client bag offer procedures…

As much as some will continue to deny and insist Hermes has strict protocols and procedures for obtaining these highly sought quota bags, we have multiple examples of influencers obtaining them with virtually no spend and in very little time compared to others.

I agree with your sentiments. I do wonder if there will be a shift away from supercharged consumerism that seems at least partially fueled by social media. I admit I was completely turned off by the term "influencer" when I first heard it. My thought was, why would someone willingly want to be influenced? It doesn't have a positive connotation to me (feels somehow nefarious ), and I really can't bring myself to consume any of their content.

But, I do enjoy poking around on the TPF, as I get exposed to many things I'd not normally see. And certainly, that's caused me to want things and in some cases to buy them. So I've apparently been influenced here, but would rather call it "broadening my horizons"! :P

I think you may not be a regular Hermes client as you don't really post in the Hermes Forum in the past.

Hermes nowadays do have a much stricter protocol and procedure for QB offerings than in the past. A few years ago Hermes was having issues with some SAs in 'certain' boutiques selling Birking/Kellys to resellers or clients who were offering gifts/money. It makes sense for Hermes to stricter up their offering policy and protocol to prevent similar situations from happening again..
Honestly, Hermes has plenty wealthy clients who are also famous influencers already. Many less known influencers or YouTubers need Hermes to hype up their profiles or images, but I doubt Hermes need them to hype up Hermes' brand image.

Please do not believe in everything you saw in the social media.

I understand what Hermes may say to certain clients about their protocol, but this thread alone is an indication that it is not as meritorious as you think it is. Unless, you think Cassie is lying about purchasing the mini Kelly at the boutique? Or that she spent the $30k to buy it preloved? Or you think it is a replica? I watch Cassie a lot and I don't position her as someone to do either of these things, especially as she was reading directly off her receipt in the video.

I can definitely see the business case for Hermes allowing influencers like Cassie to buy a mini Kelly. She is likely to "influence" others to either become Hermes clients or buy all the other stuff Hermes has just to have a chance at getting a quota bag. Rinse and repeat.
