I kept getting different responses from different agents... first said i needed two policies. the other said the value for a stand alone policy for a single piece of jewelry has to exceed over 30k... then another said it had to exceed 25k.... I'm really happy I was able to get it today and have it active.

When my sister got her ring, it didnt come in a Tacori box and she had to go back and ask. I was really surprised but the jeweler provided it without a problem. You figured that they should be given to the store when the item is returned from tacori? ooOOh! That is a great idea to keep a small one in my purse for it! I have a jade ring my grandmother gave me that has a really small box that I can use actually. Perfect! I totally forgot I had it until now haha
Yea I have noticed that various agents have different rules. I get that they want the whole caboodle but mine has never pushed me for it.

I have a box for every ring in my purse, and the ring boxes are where they sleep each night. Even if I wanted to sleep in them, the plain band is the only one I sleep in if at all. My fingers swell so bad, that I usually can't even put my rings on til after like 9am anyway. And I get up at 5.
Oooo, where do you guys get your rings insured? Through homeowner's insurance or an independent place? My ring still isn't insured because we have no clue where to go/what to do LOL. Also, I sleep in my ring *guilty* I just can't bear to part with it! But now I'm convinced retiring it to the ring box while sleeping/napping will be better for the overall life and well being of my ring :D

I looked for Chubb agents in my area and found one RIGHT near my house, bear in mind that I did this 7 years ago, and it was smooth as silk to get covered. This agency handles all sorts of insurances but I only needed that policy.

Ooo, it's called "Chubbs"? I thought you were referring to someone when I read that in one of the earlier posts LOL. I want to get my ring insured, but we asked around and people were just like "oh yeah, just go through your homeowner's insurance" but I've read stories where the policy sucks and won't allow you to get an equal ring back in the case of theft/loss but something "comparable." $20 per $1k insured sounds like a good deal! I'll talk to my DF about it tonight :D Thanks! And yeah, you definitely don't want to poke your DF's eye out! Luckily I sleep alone (we don't live together) but I'm always afraid I'm going to whack my ring against the headboard .. .

yup yup! Trust me! When DF's friend told us about it we were like... ummm it's called what? and She had to spell it out for me. haha but we have heard nothing but good things. Ame actually has experience with the claim and seemed to really think it was hassle free. DF's friend had a crack in her diamond and they sent her a check no problem. Our agent didnt even ask for an appraisal at first, but since I had one he took it and put it in my file. It was easy and once i wrote the check, the policy became active! Simple and fast!

Our renters/home owners was asking only $40/year or something really nominal to add to our current policy. But they said "of like" value which means you may not be able to get your tiffanys again... i don't want OF LIKE. I need same or better if it gets stolen because I will seriously be one upset woman on a rampage! I think Jeweler's Mutual is supposed to be another good alternative to Chubb if you are unable to find a policy to stand alone. But they work and pay the jeweler directly after you select what you want as a replacement? or something to that effect. Might want to shop around with both companies, for us, the small price difference to upgrade to Chubbs was worth it.

Boar - Thank you so much! I really really love my ring!

Thanks Ame and Whoops! I hope my meeting with an agent goes as well as both of your experiences!

I agree - of like sucks!

Just be ready to call around a little bit. I was lagging on getting insurance because he proposed on Wednesday night and we said we would do it before the weekend. It came and went then DF threatened to lock it away until I got on it and picked the policy and agency I wanted! haha So I called first thing this morning and was insured by noon! Use the website's locator for agents and then start from the top and just keep calling down the line haha. Good Luck! Hopefully you can find someone, if not, I can PM you the information for the agent I went with here and hopefully he can do it for you.

It's Chubb Personal Insurance. It's CHUBB which is a HUGE insurance company. But they do personal standalone for jewelry. BUT you have to find an agent that will work with JUST the jewelry and usually it requires a fairly high valued item or series of items. They wouldn't take my sister.

It's very worthwhile to look into. And if they WON'T take you, Jewelers Mutual is another jewelry only one. I wasn't thrilled with the way my mom's problem was handled but that's been a while.

Ooo, I like how your DF works! So assertive and in control haha. My DF is such a lagger (but right now I'm cutting him some slack since he's sick!) but he seems very interested in Chubb. Thanks for the info, I'll give them a call and if I am having trouble, I'll ask you for your agent's info :D

Ame - I've heard some mixed reviews about Jeweler's Mutual, so I am not so hot on jumping on them just yet. I'll give Chubb a call tomorrow and hopefully they let me do a stand alone insurance for my ring!!! Thanks for all your help :smile1:

If you cannot get Chubb, JM is good. Just be sure they note TIFFANY on yours. It HAS to be noted. That gives substantial value. My mom had so many issues with them, and so did my aunt. Since they were finally both able to get Chubb they have never looked back. I considered adding my sister's rings on my policy but I dunno how that works.

I'm curious - why would you need to keep boxes for your rings in your purse? Isn't that asking for trouble - i.e. you would take off your rings during the day (for what reason?) and have them in your purse...and someone grabs your purse! I used to not take my rings off unless I was cooking or doing something messy, but more and more I'm taking them off when I get home and leaving them off until the next morning. My fingers also swell...if I take them off, it's harder to put them back on in the morning, but if I had to wait until 9 am to put them back on, I'd never wear them because I'd already be at work!

But...I can see why one wouldn't want to wear their rings when doing household chores, or cooking, etc., but why not wear them while sleeping? I wore my rings every night during my first marriage (28 years) and never had a problem with them. How can rubbing against sheets a few times during the night do anything to gold, platinum or diamonds?

Just curious!

The friction really does wear the rings and prongs down. People who work with fabric will tell you that. Gold is particularly susceptible. But the bigger issue is that if there's a rough prong or a prong not totally touching the stone, and a thread from a blanket or sheet gets under it and you thrash or roll over, there goes that prong and possibly your stone with it. On my first ring before it was stolen I learned that lesson early, but luckily didn't snap the prong off or lose my stone!

As far as the ring boxes, till my purse was stolen with the rings in them a year ago at the gym, I would use them to hold my rings while I was working out. Especially with weights. I don't want the platinum being totally ruined or the rings being warped. I still do that when I do actually go to the gym, my purse just stays WITH ME at all times or locked in the trainers office which is constantly watched and has cameras in the event someone DID break in. I keep ring boxes and tiffany suede pouches with me in the event that I need to take them off at work or elsewhere. Prior to switching jobs I needed to take them off a lot so that I wouldn't get glue/spray adhesive all over them, which is a NIGHTMARE to get off everything, and if I am banging my hands around a lot I take them off too. At my current job I just do a lot of paper work and filing and its jsut safer and easier not to have them on.

I also take them off if I am going to the hair place or trying on clothing. Flying stuff, and people grabbing at them with crap all over their hands, snagging possibilities....Im too anal retentive!

I don't usually put my rings on til I am just leaving for work or til I get to my desk and situated. My hands get back to normal and not swollen by then usually. I don't usually keep rings on at home, esp for cleaning, cooking, working on an invitation order, etc. I do not wear rings or allow jewelry around any invitation orders ever. I don't want to damage the paper or scratch the inks.

Wow - I'm super late to the party!! AMAZING ring!!! CONGRATS!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you!!! I remember your posts about your own Canadian diamond. Oooh I like your new avatar picture too! I hope your wedding planning is going well! The big day is coming up!

Whoops, your ring is just absolutely stunning!!!! :worthy: I've been reading your posts and enjoyed reading the huge research you undertook to choose this beauty - congratulations!!!

Thank you! It was quite an undertasking to be able to research and teach ourselves how to really look and tell what a well cut diamond is from a poor cut diamond. We were all over the place with options of carat weight/color/clarity it was a big circus in our heads because we really weren't sure. Now that it's on my finger we are positive that we did the right thing and got the best diamond we could have for the budget. Sometimes DF will see a ring now and notice how large it is but be able to tell a little about the cut and color. He'll just look over at me and say that he is so happy we went with a shiny smaller diamond (but I think it's just his way of reminding me that this is his upper limit for carat size! humph! haha)

LOL....you make me laugh bc my DH is the same. He already thought my e-ring was large enough sans halo!!!

I think with my halo being approx 2mm or so, from what I'm able to determine, but entire ring (with halo) will resemble something in the "just under 3 carat range"

Still NO word from my jeweller
